No need to carry the heavy avalanche backpack when no snow. Going retro instead.

Siberian Husky Zeena leads the way down the middle of a wide groomed ski trail through a forest. The center of the trail is flat for skate skiing (or hiking) and one set of traditional Nordic tracks are set on each side. A small river can be seen on the right, with a slightly arched bridge over it in the distance ahead.
Looking back from the previous photo, we see Skijoring pair of human Jeff and Alaskan husky Tonttu approaching down the middle of the trail. Jeff is in a bright red jacket, goggles and snow pants, with short, wide backcountry-style skis. Tonttu is cutting diagonally across the path, long pink tongue hanging out, focused on something offscreen to the right. On the left, there is a somewhat steep short slope down to the river with a park bench at the top.
A slightly off-kilter snapshot of a different bridge over the Willow River, in a small canyon with rocky walls on the far shore. Jeff and Tonttu lead the way across the bridge, while Zeena's head can be seen as she approaches from the left.
The dramatic falls at the eastern, upstream end of the Willow River, cutting through a rocky canyon in winter. The trees and vegetation are brown, and a blotchy layer of white covers the rocks emerging from the water on either side. A good amount of water is going over the multi-tiered falls, powered by recent spring melt prior to the blizzard that brought snow back to the region.
The Ides of March 2026 blizzard was a Goldilocks blizzard for us in the Twin Cities region: about a foot of snow, more or less. A good workout to clear, and enough to provide a nice base for skiing over formerly bare ground.
Over in the UP of Michigan they […]

My wife and myself in matching blue softshell jackets and winter hats stand smiling on the snow-covered summit of Sonnspitz r (2,639 m) in the Tuxer Alps, Austria. Behind them stretches a sweeping panorama of snow-covered alpine ridges under a clear blue sky, with the Glungezer radio station visible in the far left background.
Selfie of myself at the wooden summit cross of Sonnspitz, wearing a grey beanie and orange-mirrored sports sunglasses. A red avalanche transceiver probe is visible on my blue jacket. The snowy Tuxer Alps ridge and a mountain station building are visible in the background under bright winter sunshine.
Portrait of a myself standing on the rocky, snow-covered summit of Glungezer (2677m) in the Tuxer Alps, Austria. I am wearing a blue Dynafit softshell jacket, grey beanie, and orange-mirrored sunglasses, holding ski poles. A vast panorama of snow-capped alpine peaks extends into the hazy distance behind me.
First-person perspective looking down a steep, narrow snow couloir during a ski tour ascent on Glungezer in the Tuxer Alps. The tips of my touring skis and a ski pole are visible in the foreground, with the couloir's compacted skin track leading upward toward a rocky ridgeline against a blue winter sky.
Today, my wife and I went on a short ski tour to the summit of Glungezer at around 2,700m and to nearby Sonnspitz at around 2,600m
The weather was absolutely perfect, with hardly any wind (which is rare for these peaks), and the snow was perfect too.
Let's […]

A serene winter landscape featuring snow-covered mountains and evergreen trees around the Glungezer summit in the Tuxer Alps in Tirol/Austria. The sky is filled with clouds, and the sun is partially hidden, casting a soft, diffused light over the scene. The overall mood is peaceful and picturesque.
... not easy to stay calm and literally find peace these days ...

Looking back down the wide ski trail laid by Dale, who is taking the photo, you see Zeena leading Tonttu and Jeff in line towards the camera. They're attached to Jeff's hip pack by separate leads, Zeena's longer, allowing her to be out front.
A low shot of the trio of skijorers led by Zeena, followed by Tonttu and Jeff. The camera is down at husky level, looking back down the photographer's ski trail. Strong winter sunlight casts stripey shadows of birch tree trunks across the trail from the right, while evergreens rise on the left. A tall, lone pine tree rises from the side of the path behind them.
One more shot of the trio of skijorers, this time from slightly above, showing the two huskies' bright red X-back pulling harnesses. Their fur shines bright in the winter sun.
Jeff has taken the lead to break trail now, so Zeena and Tonttu lead Dale, the photographer down the trail behind him as he skis away. Zeena still leads on a slightly longer line than Tonttu, who doesn't seem to mind being wheel dog. Jeff's rounding a bunch of evergreens on the left, while bright white paper birch line the right.
The snow now has a bit of icy crust, which made breaking trail difficult for the huskies, so we took turns creating a path for them up the trail. There was some trial & error to get them inline and not competing for the narrow track space...

The deep snow has gotten a little firmer, but now has a thin icy crust, so not fun for huskies to break trail on. We took turns laying trail for them to follow. With a bit of trial and error, we managed a lead arrangement that allowed Zeena and Tonttu their […]
