A large woodpecker faces towards image-right while sitting atop a large birch branch, its slender black beak slightly open. The bird has a bright-red crown and a black and white striped face. Its body is covered in black feathers with some white fringing.
During a mid-fall camping trip, this pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) surprised us on our campsite and stuck around long enough to have his photo taken. What a treat!
