🐦 First time I've seen #birds eat #beautyberry - and this is why it's an essential source of food during the winter months.

If you live in these states, please add this shrub to your landscape 👉🏽 AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA

AND you can make #jam from it! (See comments)

At this time of year Beautyberries (callicarpa) appear in Portland and are a nice source of food for songbirds. A favorite of the Cedar Waxwing, or Jaseur des cèdres, in French (I think) I'd love to know what Beautyberries are called in French ! #beautyberry

💜 Do you have #beautyberry in your yard?? Tested a batch of beautyberry #jam yesterday with #stevia. It was my first time tasting these little #berries and the flavor was really light and floral!

And, yes, I'm leaving plenty of berries for the #birds. 🐦 😉

Meet Beautery, the embodiment of the "Beautyberry" concept.
Beautery produces berries that serves as food for animals. Though astringent, they are made into wine and jelly. The leaves also work as a mosquito repellent.

This is the time of year where this plant (now 6-7 years old) really starts to shine! #Beautyberry (Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion') is a native plant to Texas, and this year it is the most spectacular its ever been. We had a somewhat 'mild-ish' Summer (less triple digits). The birds will feast!

🌱 Still no berries on this variegated Japanese #Beautyberry 'Duet' but I have no complaints.

Beautyberries successfully jellied! Needs to set still but my initial taste test yielded something close to like a cherry candy flavor? Not at all what I expected but very tasty.

Today we we’re taking a look at a plant that you simply do not see very often in the landscape. The plant in question is called American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) and it’s native to the southern United States specifically, much like the flower Jewels of Opar. With that pedigree you’d think it’d be a more common sight but I see very few of these shrubs in my travels all over Cumberland county and surrounding regions. What makes this plant special is that it fills a similar role to Forsythia, except that its bloom time is later and its best display does not happen until summer.

So, what is an American Beautyberry you ask, well let’s start with the name. The Genus name ‘Callicarpa’ means Beautiful Fruit, Americana means ‘from America’. Honestly as far as botanical Latin goes this this translation is one of the easiest you will ever see, but it gets better. Callicarpa is in the Lamiaceae family which means effectively it’s a big shrubby Mint, minus the invasive tendencies. In terms of the physical features; American beautyberry has an opposite leaf arrangement and tan to light brown or reddish stems that arch gracefully once it’s berries develop. The leaves are a medium to light green color, elliptical to ovate in shape and have a serrated margin. In the fall those leaves turn a golden yellow color. Beautyberry shrubs are hardy in USDA zones 6a through 10b, and while they are at their best in full sun conditions they can tolerate partial shade as well. The flowers of this native shrub vary in color and may be blue, pink, purple, lavender or, white, though volunteer Beautyberries tend to have white flowers. The average size of a mature American Beautyberry can be up to eight feet with a width of up to six feet making it a suitable barrier plant for blocking visibility.

The berries of this plant are its best feature as it bears masses of bright purple berries in mid to late summer that are beautiful to behold and visible from quite a distance. The berries often persist into late fall even after the shrub’s leaves have fallen off. These berries are a food source for a number of wild birds such as American Robins, Brown Thrashers, Purple Finches, and the Eastern Towhee. The berries also support wild animals such as Armadillos, Foxes, Opossums, Raccoons and Squirrels but also White Tailed Deer are known to eat the fruit and the leaves. Also you can eat the Berries too, as they are somewhat sweet but have a astringent effect and are best used in making jellies, jams and preserves but also can be used to make wine. The leaves of American Beautyberry have been found to have a compound that repels Mosquitoes, Ticks and Fire Ants and other nuisance insects and all you have to do is crush the leaves and rub the juice on your skin.

The active compounds in the leaves that repel insects have been isolated and are called Callicarpenal and Intermedeol. Additionally it’s credibly noted that Native Americans used the roots, leaves and branches to treat Malaria and Rheumatism. Compounds extracted from the roots have been used to treat dizziness and Dysentery which the Oregon Trail people probably could have used. I'm very certain little Timmy would have at least made it to the river rafting at the end if they had known.

How does one get this plant? Well, you could go to the Garden center and buy one if they have it. Or perhaps you could order it online. There are variegated foliage options and a cultivar with white berries if that’s your thing. If you’re like me you could do what I did and get one as a volunteer. The one in the photographs included with this TWHD post sprang up in the garden a few years ago likely by way of wild Songbird droppings and at first I thought the plant to be a volunteered Lantana which is also something a lot of folks don’t buy, they just end up with volunteers. When I realized it was not a lantana, I potted it and grew it on for a year or two and eventually planted it in the yard. Amazingly, a second volunteer has appeared this year near where the first appeared and I am not upset about this. It’s funny how nature always fills a void with just the right plant to brighten up an otherwise bland lawn area.

Stay tuned for next week’s TWHD when we take a look at a weed with a name so rad it belongs in a rock band.

A little sneak preview of the kiln results! Im still working out what my style is with painting on ceramics, so most of my pieces are just "okay" in my books. Im not mad about how this turned out but im happy with the idea of it! #ceramics #mayco #Laguna #beautyberry #botanicalart #plantbowl
