Natte Beek This graphite pencil drawing ‘Beek – 14-04-25’ depicts a slighty cubist interpretation of an eponymous landscape. There’s this house called the ‘Natte Beek’ (‘Wet Rivulet’) which is funny. All rivulets, creeks or waters in general are wet, aren’t they? This actual spot is very well known to locals because it is a striking scenery. When you pass it via the Rijksstraatweg you’ll easily spot it. That’s because it is situated in an open field in the bushy hills of Beek. Many times I have seen it with childish curiosity sitting in a bus towards my grandmother in the Ooij. Especially in winter it looks like a gothic fairytale, looking forelorn in the woods. In summer it looks less threatening when meadows are all green. Spring has arrived and my outdoors sketching inclinations are growing. Therefor I thought it would be a good start using this spot as artistic motif. Paper Strucure Quite a while now since I made a last landscape really. My last one of Beek showed the old and the new Bartholomeuskerk in a cubistic approach. This time I had it in me to combine impressionism with cubism. This feeling appeared to exactly match the presupposition I had with regard to this Hahnemühle Bamboo sketch paper. Rather grainy of structure reacting to my pencil made me think of Ingres paper of the same brand. It happened to be that my soft 14B pencil scratched across the paper like a knife cuts through soft butter. Even rubbed out with a stump the structures still looked broken and open. Very likeable indeed I must say even though a bit too grainy without using a stump. Slightly Cubistic The goal was to implement cubist styling only subtlely. The treeline in the back for example is drawn more abstractly than it lets on initially. The hedge in front of the house has a split halfway. A deliberate addition from my part according to the principle of singularity. The tree in the front to the left was nothing but fun to draw. Very rewarding and satisfying to erase this dots.

My Favorite Spot This graphite pencil drawing ‘Berg en Dal – 21-04-25’ is my next landscape endeavour after the previous one, called ‘Beek – 14-04-25’. Cubism meets impressionism once more. The title is a bit arbitrary because I think it might also be part of Beek. Ubbergen, Berg en Dal, Groesbeek, Beek and even Ooij are all part now of the bigger municipality Berg en Dal. Therefor it doesn’t matter really. Since I gave a couple of drawings and pastels the same title I think it’s fair enough. They are made in the same area as this one, which offers a view on the Boterberg positioned to the left. In fact ‘Berg en Dal – 25-10-23’ is a vista on hill in the center to the right. This must be my favorite spot. Probably since 1980 when I visited it for the first time with my parents. Not Fully in Leaf Yet The reference photo I took some weeks ago when the trees were not in leaf yet. Only some pines on the Boterberg show some darker leafy planes. Even though there weren’t many leaves yet, tree branches show subtle bifuractions. Especially when the outer ends already show buds their outlines tend to appear as beautiful bulged structures. Certainly, similar to abstract geometric shapes and I simply love those. When trees are fully in leaf often they block the view too much. You simply can’t suggest depth between trees too much anymore. My aim though was to depict the structures of the hilly slopes and treescapes altogether. So was right on time. Sketchy Feel This having said, the lighting of course is the key factor but it needed more. The previous one was made both cubist and impressionist. However, my roundism adventures are still in my fingers but I kept an early drawing ‘Valley of the Philosophers - 20-10-15’ in mind. Quite abstracted that one was. So executed this one in geometric shapes but also took care of maintaining a sketchy feel. Surely I was avoiding overproducing it, keeping the essential message of impressionism in mind.

The Very Spot This graphite pencil drawing ‘Beek - 18-05-23’ follows my previous one of Den Haag. I wanted to do this one for a long time. That’s because I remember the very spot from a visit at age 10. There is this smashing walking route in the hills outside Nijmegen, called the ‘N70’. I have walked it many times or parts of it but the first time is burned into my memory. You come across the Kastanjedal (Chestnut Valley) on the route and a little creek runs downhill. Allegedly you could drink from it so I tried that out for sure. From the fact I write this art statement you can assume it didn’t do me much harm. There is also this wooden bridge that looks a bit makeshift. It’s probably constructed of branches from the immediate vicinity. I presume the water still is drinkable although I didn’t try this time. Another Treescape I felt the urge to render leafy structures in cubist planes once more though. The beamy structures of the armrests only add to the flavour. However, the challenge was to clearly depict the main theme, namely the bridge and the path lingering upwards. Next to that the leafy patterns are running all across it. They almost seem to disturbe the scenery, even ripping it apart. So it was a matter balancing out light an dark planes but also keeping the structure of the path. This way I hope to offer some guidance through the landscape but also beautiful abstract tonal qualities. My Ambition My initial ambition was to do another treescape in the very style as my drawing ‘Berg en Dal - 02-05-23’. ‘Gent - 08-05-23’ was a cubist one too. Looking at these latest works I can see that’s the direction I want to move into. To me it’s the perfect symbiosis of impressionism, art deco and cubism. I think my art always will be figurative of nature, touched by an impressionist and/or cubist styling. I will let myself guide by the light all the time though. I repeat what Monet once said. “I paint the light on things, not the things themselves”.

The Second One This colored pencil drawing ‘De Smorenhoek – 15-12-24’ is my next impressionist one after ‘Royal Estate – 12-12-24’. This time in color. This isn’t the first time I did a drawing after the place. The last one was 4 years ago during the Corona crisis. The very scenery wasn’t much known to me actually. I knew it alright. In fact, I have known Beek-Ubbergen for whole my life. Simply because my aunt Drina lived there and we visited her frequently throughout the years. On Rozen-maôndag during Carnaval I remember walking down the Ketedal hearing the music. The Smorenhoek is just on the other side of the Boterberg. An anomaly really because, except for the Elysian Fields. It’s all trees and hills in Beek and Berg en Dal. So there I was a couple of years back, walking down the path with my dad Henk Akkers. Focus on the Clouds The first impression did a lot to me. The sun shone brilliantly and it created lovely cast shadows across the fields. That was some years back. Now in 2024 and still a astonished by my 2nd warning by Youtube (Prude Tube) I made another ‘safe’ drawing. Not a one appearing on the Tube quickly. They banned me and I will bann them for a while. Not that they will notice though. Anyway, I quite liked doing another landscape. In this particular work I focused on the hefty play of dark and light in the clouds really. The greens of the trees in the front and in the back almost look blackish on the picture. However, I remember they weren’t that black at the actual spot. So, I added a lot of red and orangy browns and let them correspond with the the clouds colours.

Liberation Day Walk This graphite pencil drawing ‘Beek - 09-05-24’ is a bit of cubism placed in atmospheric depth. Last weekend I went out to spot some sceneries with my dad. Playground: Berg en Dal and Beek-Ubbergen. We parked on the Rijksstraatweg and walked our way up to the Filosofendal. That was last May 5th, Liberation Day. Not a particular beautiful day though. In the beginning it was cloudy and I saw dark clouds start appearing. Later that walk here comes the sun. Suddenly there was enough sunshine to took some great reference pictures of treescapes and hills. There was also Huis Wylerberg that caught my attention. Surely gonna make some of that villa in the next future. Perhaps even doing a pastel on a spot I discovered. There, in a meadow, you look right over the house and the Ooijpolder. That will be later. First, my artistic considerations as to this. Kethel Walking back to my car there was this beautiful willow tree with some houses in the background. Immediately I thought of a previous treescape I made, called ‘Kethel - 13-07-19 (Sold)’. This time I thought the triangular roof shapes were in perfect contrast to all things circular in the tree. Maybe this one turned into something more realistic. At least less abstract than the Kethel piece. However, there is plenty of abstraction, especially in the foliage and little branches. In the end I toned down the houses and the tree in the back on the right. They asked for too much attention. It’s always hard to finetune these things. Too much and it will be in competition with the main theme. Too less and you cannot have secondary stuff support that main theme efficiently. All in all, a nice experiment and a bit back to cubist styling again.

50 Hues of Pink Beek-Ubbergen again and 50 shades of pink in honour of the fact that colour is highly underestimated in landscapes and outdoors in general. The more I look at woods, forest, meadows and all things natural under the light of the sky, the more I come to realize daylight seems to become scattered and torn apart and show all kinds of hues, no matter what hue a substance holds initially. All things green like trees and grasses do not show green only and if they do (for the untrained eye) from an artistic point of view all that green violence has to be counterbalanced by other colors. Ipse Dixit! The Actual Spot When I was driving along ’t Meertje (see my last drawing Beek 28-09-20) I decided to head to Persingen where I took this photo. At the left there this is baroque kind of tower that is part of Villa Waalheuvel, which serves as a kind of landmark of Ubbergen, just as the former monastery Notre Dame des Anges. In the front ’t Meertje is lingering, the former river Rhine where Romans transported their roof tiles on. 50 Hues of Blue, Purple and Green The view on the Lower Rhine Heights (see previous drawing) creates a kind of blue screen when you look at it from a distance for the first time, especially on the brink of Spring when there are not much green leafs to be seen. When you take the time to let it all sink down and scrutinize, then a world seems to open up in front of your eyes. There is some much color to discover: hints of green, blue, purple, even faint yellow and pink. Basically I put them all in only to put them under a kind of blue pencil coat. My hatches strokes proved to become handy as contour delineations from a distance will not be depicted in the right way by drawing in the direction of the forms anyway. The Front I kept the front quite simple. The bush next to the middle almost serves like a repoussoir. The poles give me the opportunity to draw some sharp contrasting details in the front.

Beek-Ubbergen Just outside Nijmegen towards the German border there are two places of beauty called the Ooij Polder and the start of the ‘Nijmeegse Heuvelrug’, part of the Lower Rhine Heights. For people living outside The Netherlands it must be a sorry sight but at least there are hills and I know them very well for whole my life. My paintings The Ooij Polder (2013) and The Elysian Fields (2013) are situated in them. Exact spot The drawing was not made at the spot but today. I took the photo in Spring though but weather conditions last days were pretty bad. Perhaps this one expresses my longing for sketching outdoors. Hopefully we still will get some Indian Summer days this year. The spot by the way is in The Ooij Polder, along the riverside of ’t Meertje. On the other bank the village of Beek-Ubbergen starts. Impressionism in Colored Pencil I wanted to do an impressionistic landscape again like my previous drawing Notenboompark 18-09-20 since this only the second executed in colored pencil in that style. My diagonally layed hatched strokes accidentally fit the angle of the sun rays perfectly, whereas the strokes depicting the water were placed in the direction of the waves. It was a great study after color relations with colored pencil. I noticed I had to work a little bit harder in order to get some saturation. As to this the paper is very unforgiven and the nature of the colored pencil is that a stroke once laid, cannot be undone. Nevertheless, I think I managed to keep my colors clean.
