Slows Bar BQ to open second full-service restaurant in Berkley Popular Detroit barbecue company Slows Bar BQ is expanding to Oakland County again with the addition of a Berkley restaurant set to open this fall. Located where Berkley Common restaurant was until its recent closing, Slows Bar BQ will be at 3087 12 Mile, just west of Coolidge in the heart of Berkley. This isn't the smoked meat destination's first foray into Oakland County; Slows had a Pontiac location for a few years as well. Slows' catering arm is already serving the area for graduation parties and other events, and the food truck can be seen here and there, including at the Northwood Food Truck Social near Woodward and 12 Mile on Tuesday evening. The Berkley Slows Bar BQ is expected to have indoor and outdoor dining on the main floor with a space upstairs for private events and catering. Managing director Terry Perrone tells The Detroit News that when Slows founder Brian Perrone and Phil Cooley started Slows in Corktown 20 years ago in September of 2005, it was the neighborhood vibes that attracted them to the area because they saw Slows as a neighborhood type of brand. Terry Perrone says they see the same possibilities in Berkley. "It's walkable, it's right in the heart of that community, it's really exciting," he said, adding that the landlords and previous tenants have done a lot with the corner building. Before it was Berkley Commons, it was known as the Berkley Front, a two-story place for food, drinks and live music. Slows will join several other dining destinations on that strip of 12 Mile including Green Lantern, the Rind, 24 Seconds Bar & Grill, O'Mara's Restaurant and others. "It just felt like, oh wow, this area is really coming up. We were ecstatic. The landlords found us and we were like, yes, we'd love to look at this building," Perrone said. The Slows in Corktown is open daily for lunch and dinner at 2138 Michigan and Slows To Go serves Midtown at 4107 Cass.
