Hand-tinted postcard of a street scene; large tree to the left, lane running away in the centre, white-painted corner shop to the right, with other buildings lining the lane. Several people in Edwardian dress stand in front of the shop, one with a bicycle.
Photograph taken in 2025 of the scene from the postcard; the same tree to the L although it's winter so it has no leaves, the same lane (now a road) running away in the centre, lined with houses; the same white-painted corner shop, now with bright blue signage and paint to the ground floor. No people!
It's a month since I checked in here, but I've been busy with my #OnePlaceStudy #Genealogy and #LocalHistory. I had fun recreating this Edwardian postcard of Meeting House Lane in #BalsallCommon #Berkswell #OldnallEnd. Amazing how much remains the same 120 years later!
I blogged! It's been an entire year since my last #OldnallEnd #Berkswell #OnePlaceStudies blog, so here is my two-year-one-place reflection on what I've learned in 2024 (hint: A LOT) #LocalHistory #Genealogy #Warwickshire

I ❤️ court rolls. Today I learned there was a house in Berkswell in the 1650s called The Raven’s Nest 🐦⬛🪺

Photo shows an ornate stone memorial perhaps 10 feet tall, standing against a stone wall, with the light-shadow of a stained-glass window falling across it
The rather fabulous Ferrers family tomb in Tamworth. Jobe Lavender, one of my ##OnePlaceStudy folks from ##OldnallEnd #Berkswell was servant to Sir Humphrey c.1600 and got into a bit of trouble on his behalf 😬

Photo shows a young sycamore tree with sparse leaves growing out of a hedgerow by the side of a tarmacked lane. The glow of the setting sun illuminates the tree against the crisp blue sky.
Walked down to visit my #OnePlaceStudy 's most ancient meadows and the setting sun made this not at all ancient tree unexpectedly spectacular #LocalHistory #OldnallEnd #Berkswell #Warwickshire

Saturday morning in my favourite archive with this fab old wall in the car park. Worked my way through a huge bundle of deeds, met a #LocalHistory hero, and finally identified the Timothy of Timothy's Field #winning

I searched the #Berkswell Churchwardens' accounts & found two entries in 1611: 2d on 'paper for the setting downe the seate rooms' and 3d 'for writing the seate rooms'. Most of the people named on the late C17 copy were alive in 1611, so this list may well have been the source. Exciting!!
Pencilled floorplan of Berkswell parish church with compass directions indicated and lists of names on each side.
Found an unexpected treasure yesterday in the back of the #Berkswell Parish Register - a list of C17 parishioners and where they sat in the parish church!! Here's a preliminary sketch... excited to find out more ##OnePlaceWednesday #LocalHistory #Warwickshire
This beautiful house was demolished last week for HS2 and it felt like a kick to the stomach, so I wrote up its history #Berkswell #BalsallCommon #OldnallEnd #OnePlaceStudy #LocalHistory

New map in progress. This one will be all about the fields, working backwards from the 1839 Tithe Apportionment

A hand drawn outline map of Berkswell parish, with roads, parish divisions, watercourses and listed buildings marked in pen and a lot of working information marked in pencil.
For #OnePlaceWednesday here's my working map of #Berkswell parish c.1839. I'm so curious about the history of the parish divisions (in black), which look like they should be neat quarters but very much aren't! #OnePlaceStudy #LocalHistory
Screenshot of a 16th-century handwritten survey in a flourishing hand, slightly marred by lines on the screen
Working my way through this 1554 survey and thinking GCSE Latin was a looooooong time ago #OnePlaceStudy #LocalHistory #OldnallEnd #Berkswell
