The UCP's Bill 55 allows the Health Minister to appoint non-provincial entities (i.e., private, for-profit interests) to operate Alberta's hospitals. This is exactly what American-style two-tier healthcare looks like. #Bill55 #ABleg #Abpoli #DanielleSmith

7/8 Bill 55's passage last month moved Public Health from arm's length to direct political control.
👉 No more independence.
👉 No more science-based decisions.

Just pure political interference in medical expertise.

The UCP, drunk on Trump's MAGA Kool-Aid, are undermining Public Health.

Alberta's #UCPGovt is trotting out #Bill55, favouring private, for-profit medicine over Canada's #PublicHealthcare system
Is this really what you want, #Alberta?
Because - as seen in the States - privatization has been a disaster for millions of Americans

10/12 Recent escalation: Bill 55 (May 2025) allows government to choose private operators for public hospitals. Combined with ASI expansion and ongoing delisting (vision exams for kids/elderly cut January 2025). Privatization accelerating under UCP despite consistent failures.

3/5 This comes after passage of Bill 55, giving government more direct control over public health services.

Former officials warn 'public health services in Alberta are increasingly sidelined & alarmingly diminished' due to ongoing healthcare system restructuring.

This image captures what many fear about Bill 55: a Trojan horse of privatization. Transparent, obvious, and still rolling forward. Alberta’s public health care deserves better than backdoor deals disguised as reform.

A woman seated outdoors at the Alberta Legislature holds a large fluorescent green protest sign that reads: “NO TO BILL 55. Never, Never, Never, Never, Never!” She is smiling and wearing sunglasses and a denim shirt. This is 30 minutes before rally began.

Chris Galloway from Friends of Medicare speaks into a microphone on the steps of the Alberta Legislature. He is surrounded by white T-shirts strung up like protest banners, each bearing slogans like “Say No to Coal” and “Nothing About Us Without Us.” In front of him, another man stands holding a shirt that reads “Health Care Not Corrupt Care.” Discussed Bill 55 and how the UCP government cut debate on it. A bill before the Alberta Legislature will, if passed, allow for the operation and funding of hospitals by private, for-profit entities.

Bill 55, The Health Statutes Amendment Act, lets the Health Minister turn hospitals over to private interests, and private operators and charge fees for services.

CUPE Alberta President Raj Uppal joined NDP MLAs and other health care union leaders at the Alberta Legislature to call on the United Conservative Party (UCP) government to scrap the bill.

“Danielle Smith needs to keep her election promise to stay away from private hospitals,” said Uppal. “Charging fees for health care is mean, and it does nothing to bring down our already high cost of living.”

Uppal said the quality of health care has “dropped off a cliff” under the UCP’s watch, adding that reorganization, scandals like corrupt care, and underfunding “have added multi levels of chaos” to the system.

“Alberta health care needs stable funding, and quiet, competent management, not American style private hospitals and extra fees.”

6/7 This government has already privatized labs, treatment centres, and surgical facilities. Ministers and MLAs have publicly supported plans for a for-profit Urgent Care Centre in Airdrie and a massive private health facility in Fort McMurray.
