#Biophilia and #biophobia are of great interest to me

Human–nature relationships are often framed positively, but research rarely addresses #biophobia, the aversion to #nature. However, negative relationships with nature are likely to become more widespread following societal and environmental changes

Unpacking peace, science, and our fear of nature. I’m sharing thoughts on my new film project and recent research on biophobia. Have we truly reached a point where we need statistics to believe we belong in nature?

"A lack of contact with nature and limited knowledge about nature can reinforce each other in a negative spiral."
#Biophobia - people can fear what they don't know or understand.
Education in and about nature is vital

Connection between biophobia target and framework categories. The three most common biophobia targets and their different associations to the identified (a) drivers, (b) consequences, and (c) treatments. To ensure consistency between panels, data have been weighted so that each study’s total contribution across themes equals 1, allowing studies that mentioned multiple themes to contribute proportionally to each. Note that in panel (c), the theme “Not specified/Other” includes a small number of specific treatments not covered by the conceptual framework, mainly various medical procedures (n = 9).
#geography #biophobia #nature #perception
The conceptual framework of biophobia. General categories and cross-disciplinary definitions of the drivers and consequences of, and treatments for, biophobia are needed to bridge research fields. Although defined here as discrete factors, it is important to note the interaction between internal and external drivers, the relationship between their consequences, and the feedback loop from the consequences back to the drivers of biophobia (“the vicious cycle of biophobia”; Soga et al. 2023). Given its generality, this framework can also be applied to human–nature relationships beyond aversive ones. Illustrations by Robin Hoshino.
#geography #biophobia
