€3 Billion on weapons while public services crumble? The government claims we need to spend billions on fighter jets, bombs, and defence contracts due to an "imminent threat" to Ireland’s security. In reality, this push is about meeting NATO’s minimum spending requirements. Instead of wasting hundreds of millions on jet fighters, we should invest in our public services and the many social crisis affecting Ireland like the housing crisis which kills more people in Ireland a year than any foreign military, strengthening our peacekeeping capacity when it becomes economically sensible. Just one example of why they’re demanding we spend billions more on defence: They argue that Ireland’s skies are “protected” by the RAF—but perhaps the real security threat comes from NATO’s military presence on our island, from the US military in Shannon to installations across the Six Counties. If we want real security, we should reject militarisation and start by kicking the US out of Shannon and Aldergrove...
