In the white wine category, Napa Valley’s Chateau Montelena chardonnay received the most points. Among the red wines, another Napa Valley vineyard Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon bested French burgundies. The results were roundly dismissed in France and the organizer of the event was shunned by the French, but the results of the Judgment of Paris made California wines – and wineries – prestigious around the world.
On this day in 1976, the Judgment of Paris found California wines better than those from France. The event was a blind taste test, organized by a British wine seller who selected 11 wine experts – most were French – to judge which nation bottled the best vintage.
