3/4 front view of my spirifer 3d model, still a work in progress. It shows the inside of the ventral mantle since the ventral shell is removed the mantle itself is 'cut' in half to show the inside of the visceral mass, the blobby bits at the center of the soft body that contains all the organs like the gut and muscles
side view of the spirifer 3d model, showing just the outline of the shell without the visceral mass
Starting to regret my decision to cover their internal musculature as well...

3D model of a generic spiriferid Brachiopod. It superficially looks like a clam where the sides of the shell tapers into points But Brachiopods are Lophophorates, not molluscs

Checkout this cool #Mississippian ? #brachiopod which I believe is #Composita encrusted by some #bryozoa #fossilsofmissouri
An irregularly shaped slab of buff coloured limestone features in the upper left a large, flat dorsal (brachial) valve of a Strophomenida brachiopod. The valve is approximately semicircular in outline and measures about 8 cm wide across the essentially straight hinge line. Low slightly curved ribs radiate from the valve apex to the shall margin. Faint concentric ridges mark the former valve outline at earlier growth stages. To the right of the brachiopod is a lengthwise cross section through a curving solitary rugosan coral. Other fragmentary fossils are present on the same surface. A scale in the lower right is graduated in millimetres.
A big #brachiopod dorsal valve for #FossilFriday. This #Devonian (~393 MYA) #strophomenid measures about 8 cm across the straight (=strophic) hinge. Bonus appearance = longitudinal section thru' a solitary rugosan #coral to the right. Kwataboahegan Fm, Kwataboahegan R, #HudsonBayLowland, #Ontario π¨π¦
A view into the interior of a well-preserved brachiopod dorsal valve. The shell remained sediment-free after burial, but was secondarily coated on the inside by tiny quartz crystals. The delicate spiralled lophophore supports (spiralia) have also been "silicified" -- best seen on the left in this image. The valve is 24 mm (just under 1 inch) in width.
Coming in late for #FossilFriday with a lovely little early #Silurian (~436 MYA) spirifirid #brachiopod, Meristina obtusa. Interior view of dorsal valve showing preserved spiralia on left & partial drusy quartz cement infill. Width of valve = 24 mm. Attawapiskat Fm, #Akimiski Is, #Nunavut π¨π¦

A series of coral and brachiopod fossils displayed in a clear plastic container
Several coral fossils are displayed in a clear container along with a rock that has a circular hole almost all the way through it.
Various river stones and minerals displayed in a one gallon fish tank alongside a druzy quartz geode.
From top to bottom: a bison tooth fossil, an ammonite fossil, and fossilized coral
I found a pretty cool way to display my collection w an old tank & some Dollar Tree bins (all but the amethyst found in IN by yours truly π)

Duck bill shaped shell with green layers around the quadrate shaped edge. belonging to a bivalve organism with very old ancestry
The other #BRACHIOPOD post was well received, so let's complete the set with the OTHER type! those with stalks! Lingula anatina! Shells are top and bottom rather than left and right! The group has a record dating back to Paleozoic-and this taxon still alive today!

A #BRACHIOPOD shell of a living species! from California! Terebratalia occidentalis (which literally means western Terebratalia) Not a mollusc-but its own phylum dating back to the Paleozoic.
