Not necessarily if it's a genuine #BrownfieldFirst system that ensure developers actually USE brownfield sites first (i.e. they don't just talk about it).
But we've been here before - ministers promising to "encourage/make better use of" and then leaving viability provisions to undermine brownfield.

There never was a good reason for the Government to abandon #BrownfieldFirst in 2012 and there is even less reason not to restore it in 2025 - unless it wants to be seen as a poodle of the big house builders and neoliberal think-tanks.

The UK needs more of the right kinds of homes in the right places - #SocialRent housing especially. Any significant level of building should use #BrownfieldFirst, #TransitOrientedDevelopment and medium-density policies.
Instead we get urban sprawl, "cowpat estates" - because they're more profitable.

If you switched to a philosophy of #BrownfieldFirst, #TransitOrientedDevelopment, permeable (i.e. active travel enabled), medium-density development, it would get a big welcome from environmentalists. But such an approach wouldn't start with plans to develop green belts. 7⛔️

... oppose the Planning & Infrastructure Bill, demand an end to road building and airport expansion + reforms to the NPPF including #BrownfieldFirst, #TransitOrientedDevelopment, residential density standards, end of call-for-sites, etc., etc..

If we concrete over farmland, over green fields instead of brownfields, for new housing, where will our food come from? Why destroy green spaces just to shift the damage elsewhere?

◾ Imposition of residential net density standards (say 50dph minimum and 120dph maximum)
◾ A presumption against development on G1-3 farmland

Oxford: Plans for Oxpens brownfield site approved The plans were approved at an Oxford City Council planning meeting on Tuesday evening.

This city centre brownfield site is a lost opportunity.
We fully support the development of brownfield sites, but we need to create more homes in the city for the people who are already here. More offices and labs will just drive up commuter numbers.

Several organisations have been shouting themselves hoarse for years about #CarDependentSprawl, but government policy does more and more to encourage it. We need #TransitOrientedDevelopment, medium densities, #BrownfieldFirst etc..

It's not the planning system that hinders brownfield development. It's central government planning reforms which, since 2012, have abandoned proper #BrownfieldFirst policies. Their absence is, essentially, a greenfield-first policy.
