Two hundred chimpanzees are embroiled in a 'civil war' The world’s largest-known group of chimpanzees recently burst into a lethal conflict. Much like in a civil war, the group fractured into two. Then one faction began killing their former group mates on the other side, researchers write today in the journal Science. It’s an exceedingly rare event: scientists estimate that chimpanzee communities split, on average, every 500 years. The paper is “a tour de force,” said Joseph Feldblum, an evolutionary anthropologist affiliated with Duke University, who was not involved in the study. The research relied on three decades of data dating to 1995 from Kibale National Park in Uganda, home to the Ngogo chimpanzees—a community of about 200 individuals. Social relationships here clump around two primary groups, named the Central and Western clusters. For decades, they formed a single community in which chimpanzees shared territory, changed which cluster they most often affiliated with and mated with individuals from the other cluster—until 2015, says the study’s lead author Aaron Sandel, a primatologist at the University of Texas at Austin. Wild chimpanzees recorded waging 'civil war' with coordinated attacks between two groups On a June day in 2015, primatologist Aaron Sandel was quietly observing a small cluster of the Ngogo chimpanzee group in Uganda’s Kibale national park when he noticed something strange. As other members of the chimpanzees’ wider group moved closer through the forest, the chimpanzees in front of him began to display nervous behaviour. They grimaced and touched each other for reassurance, acting more like they were about to meet strangers than close companions. In hindsight, Sandel said, that moment was the first sign of what would become a years-long bloody conflict between a once close-knit group of chimps. In a new study published this week in the journal Science, Sandel and his colleagues document what may be the first observed “civil war” in wild chimpanzees. They’re treating their wounds with plants, cleaning each other’s injuries, and pulling snares off their companions’ limbs. These behaviors, documented in a new study, hint at something profound. Perhaps the roots of human medicine run deeper than we thought. Elodie Freymann, a researcher from the University of Oxford and the study’s lead author, believes these findings offer a fresh perspective on how our ancestors might have first learned to care for wounds. “Animals are helping each other out. They’re capable of identifying others in need and then addressing those specific needs,” Freymann said. Chimpanzee's Drum Solo Offers Clues to Origins of Music Researchers who analyzed dozens of spontaneous performances by a captive male chimpanzee named Ayumu say the animal’s steady rhythms and expressive ‘play face’ hint at how early humans may have transformed vocal emotion into instrumental sound. In February 2023, Ayumu — a 26-year-old male chimpanzee at Kyoto University’s Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior — treated researchers to a spontaneous musical performance. He removed floorboards from a walkway and used them to drum, producing complex, structured sounds resembling vocal expressions. “Ayumu’s drumming is nothing new,” said Dr. Yuko Hattori and colleagues from Kyoto University. “Chimpanzees are well known for their instrumental behaviors, and are particularly adept at drumming.” “But on this occasion, Ayumu’s combination of drumming and vocalization — exhibiting multiple rhythmic components — was a completely novel case.” Between February 2023 and March 2025, the authors recorded a total of 89 spontaneous performances by Ayumu.
