Rewatching #CarnivalofSouls via #Rifftrax I realized similarities between The Hitch-Hiker epi of #TheTwilightZone. Come to find out Souls was inspired by short (a top 5 fav TZ epi.) An Occurrence of Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce which I also rewatched last night.

Candace Hilligoss certainly had the face and eyes for a modern silent.

Because of the dream logic narrative, the dialogue is often repetitive and somewhat incidental. I was thinking earlier when I was reading about it that the whole movie could have been a silent with just the organ score. No music in the actual silent scenes.

This made me check out the writer. Seems like he was kind of noncommittal to any one thing. This is his only feature screenplay.

The one highlight that stands out is writing songs with Angelo Badalamenti for Nina Simone.

I have never watched all the extras on the Criterion disc - they're on the Criterion Channel, too, if you have it - so I need to see if anyone has thoughts about the scenes where she's not present, like the cops and doctor and minister at the end.

Such an interesting mix of styles.

His industrial film background shows. Obviously influenced by the expressionists. And shots like her running out of the garage have a student film "character runs towards camera, character runs away from camera" look and feel.
