This has to be my favorite episode of "Fall of Civilizations" thus far. The way Paul Cooper tells this story, the sheer amount of detail in an already very sparse part of history is just astounding. I'm really impressed and highly recommend this to people interested in ancient history.

A coin once used to pay a bus fare in Leeds was later identified as a 1st-c. BCE Carthaginian coin minted in Cádiz. The find highlights the far-reaching Phoenician world, part of the same cultural sphere encountered by ancient Israel in the biblical period.

FLOOR MOSAIC WITH ANTELOPES, C4-C5 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This is another piece of British imperial spolia, dug up by Nathan Davis in 1858 and received by the British Museum the following year. It comes from a late antique domus in Roman Carthage and was probably a threshold mosaic between two rooms. Against a white background, two horned animals drink from a cantharos fountain whose waters shoot up and divide into two cascades which overflow the cantharos and fall into a square basin below. Usually the animals in similar scenes are deer, and they represent the spirit's thirst for God. In this case they're Bohor Reedbuck antelopes, which might have been found in North Africa when this mosaic was made, though now they do not appear north of the Sahara. Plants with red flowers dot the ground, perhaps poppies. Two fancy fowl, gallinules with their characteristic arched heads, fill the space over the antelopes' backs.

FLOOR MOSAIC WITH TRITON AND NEREID, C. 150 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM Between 1857 and 1860 a novice archæologist, Nathan Davis, undertook excavations in the ruins of ancient Carthage on behalf of the British Foreign Office, receiving £1000 per annum for his discoveries, which the local Bey permitted to be exported. This was part of an imperialist competition with the equally marauding French for collecting antiquities in a strange race which would make a smashing movie. Here we see a floor mosaic from a Roman domus, perhaps itself a border for a larger mosaic, showing a triton reaching back toward a Nereid riding on his serpentine back. She seems to be having second thoughts. A shawl billows over her head, the "velificatio" that indicates her divine nature. Above their heads is a yellow border between two black lines, and then a wide frame with a guilloche between two dentillated strips. The same frame can be seen below, with a complex braid instead of the guilloche.
This #MosaicMonday we're at the #BritishMuseum to see a #mosaic from #Roman #Carthage, c. 150 CE, where the usual flirtation between a #triton and a #Nereid doesn't seem to be going well, but the complex #frame takes equal attention: #guilloches, #braids, #dentils. Fancy. #AncientBluesky 🏺

MOSAIC BORDER, C. 375 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This suspiciously perfect, symmetrical mosaic fragment comes from a domus in Roman Carthage. It depicts two Roman dolphins facing each other, separated by a downward-turned trident, a symbol of Neptune. But these dolphin are harmless and delightful, extremely abstracted and possibly genetically merged with an acanthus plant, so scrolled are their fins. Their blank eyes show no malice and their beaks are toothless and made of red-brown tesseræ, while their bodies are mainly green-blue and they blaze forth against a white background.
#MosaicMonday gives us a rare example of Roman dolphins *not* conveying menace. This #mosaic in the #BritishMuseum was once part of a #frame for a huge floor in #Carthage from c. 375 CE with the months and seasons. Here's a different take on #Roman #dolphins: toothless beaks! #AncientBluesky 🏺
