Why do we protect investors more than renters?

Investors claim they deserve profits for taking risks, so make them actually take risks.

We need to ban tenant screenings and force landlords to accept anyone with a deposit check, even if it's a voucher.

Part of the reason I have proposed tenant screening bans is that it restores risk for landlords, making it impossible to guarantee a precise return on investment.

This will cause investors to sell. Flooding the market with affordable housing.

#CashGetsKeys

It will also solve homelessness.

Slavery never went away, it only changed shapes.

I would go further and compare all poverty-wage labor to slavery in the sense that it is involuntary and coerced through threats of violence.

Homelessness is violence. Homelessness exists as a threat to the working class.

LA reforms rent control for first time in 40 years, lowering rent hikes for most tenants Under the reforms approved by a majority of City Council members, rent hikes would be capped at 4%, even if inflation in the overall economy runs higher.

I still want to see a ban on tenant screenings.

There is no good reason to protect landlords beyond a security deposit.

Damn right it does.

We are the law!

The voters can decide on absolutely anything by creating ballot initiatives.

Let's stop protecting wealthy investors and ban tenant screenings!

Cash payments to unhoused people likely won't end homelessness, but recipients spent wisely, California study says The study found recipients spent nearly all the money on basic needs like food and transportation, not drugs or alcohol.

Cash alone will not end homelessnsss.

We must also ban tenant screenings.

Why are we protecting landlords beyond a security deposit? 🤷‍♂️

Also... $750 per month?!

In Los Angeles?!

Are you fucking kidding me?!

Why are we protecting the landlords?

Start a local ballot initiative in your town to block tenant screenings and ensure everyone has access to housing.

Tenants Launch US’s First Ever Rent Debt Strike Against Corporate Landlord Nine tenants organized by the Debt Collective are refusing to pay back rent, hoping to inspire others to do the same.

Let's ban tenant screenings so prior debts have no effect on a persons ability to obtain housing.

It is time for the landlord gravy-train to come to an end.

#housing is a human right, not a risk to be assessed and mitigated.

Next week I will be attending a tenants union meeting to push the idea of a local ballot initiative to ban tenant screenings.

I have an idea for this.

Just ban tenant screenings entirely.

#cashgetskeys

I've discussed it with lots of landlords and they all said they would sell if they can't cherry-pick their tenants.

Sounds like a win to me.

The risk of a lengthy eviction is the landlords cross to bear.

Make them carry it.

We need to ban them from conducting any form of tenant screenings.

Yes!

More importantly, landlords use credit checks as a cover for discrimination.

I've worked in real-estate before, and have been pushing the idea of banning screenings for years.

Landlords usually say they would sell if they couldn't do screenings.

I say, please do.

AI costs American renters over $3.6 billion annually, according to new report The property management software used by many corporate landlords, RealPage, is deploying AI to artificially inflate rental prices in the United States by more than $3.6 billion annually, according to...

The DOJ filed a lawsuit last year over this illegal price-fixing scheme, however the incoming administration will probably drop it.

We need to take matters into our own hands. Launch a ballot initiative in your town to ban all forms of tenant screenings.

Los Angeles tenants face significant rent increases for 2025 Many Los Angeles renters face significant rent increases this year, with rent-controlled properties capped at 4% and non-rent-controlled properties up to 8.9%.

We must launch widespread ballot initiatives to ban tenant screenings.

Landlords can't get away with the increases if it becomes easy to move.

They collect at the start of the month, so we're prepaying, and they collect a deposit. 🤷‍♂️

Cities that are mostly renters (poor cities) are going to jump at voting against screenings.

It literally creates homelessness and enables slumlords.

Landlords triple dip and still want more.

They get long-term appreciation, tax avoidance, and monthly profit.

They could operate at an annual loss and still come out on top in the long-run.

This is why this needs to be tackled with widespread local ballot initiatives.

Once your private property turns into a business, it's subject to a wide range of additional regulations.

Don't like the risk? Invest elsewhere.

That is one of the main benefits of my plan, lots of landlords will list their property for sale if they can't discriminate anymore.

#CashGetsKeys

That's why you collect a deposit.

You can also bill them after the fact, sue, garnish wages, or sell the debt to collections.

Screenings are just a cover for discrimination, whether conscious or not.

Landlords have no right to gatekeep housing.

We need to work on local ballot initiatives to ban tenant screenings.

Landlords push the cost-burden of the inherent risk of their investment onto the taxpayers by creating homelessness with screenings.

Tenants pay upfront, there is no excuse to allow this practice to continue.

The excessive profits of corporate landlords are creating homelessness.

They are padding profit margins at the expense of the taxpayers.

We need to ban all forms of tenant screenings.

Tenants pay rent upfront and pay a deposit, there is no excuse for allowing landlords to cherry-pick and discriminate.

The benefit to landlords is a tiny margin increase that costs taxpayers hundreds of billions annually.

Every city has an alley like this.

We need to ban all forms of tenant screenings.

Tenants pay upfront and pay a deposit.

Screening just enables discrimination and exclusionary pricing.

Why do we allow landlords to conduct credit and background checks?

We need to work on local ballot initiatives to ban all forms of tenant screenings.

#CashGetsKeys

We definitely need to work on some ballot initiatives to ban credits checks and background checks for housing.

Renters pay upfront, and pay a deposit, so screenings are not justifiable.

It's a tool for discrimination and price-inflation, and we need to ban them.
