This image shows the catacombs located within the Sheffield General Cemetery. The cemetery opened in 1836 to manage overcrowding in Sheffield's churchyards and holds over 87,000 burials. The catacombs consist of two rows of stone vaults built into a former quarry hillside. Formerly abandoned, the site has been restored into a public park and is no longer used for active burials.
