TORA: You hear me? Take responsibility for your words!
Sorry about that. One last thing for you. Rakugo seems to the up-&-coming thing these days.

Christmas chanoyu with delicious matcha from my cousin’s tea shop in Oslo, Norway. “Gamle Ørn” translates to “old eagle” and has layered meaning in Norwegian culture. Sweets were chestnut chakin shibori and roasted persimmon. Merry Christmas! #chanoyu #teaceremony #matcha
Tea lessons in an ancient mountain forest above the Tucson desert was a stroke of fortune in this week of chaos. How healing to have tea beneath pines that have lived far longer than our country has even existed. Our sweets plate was a piece of bark shed from a centuries-old tree. #chanoyu #tea

Chabako in Seattle by Seward Park’s giant torii gate with my friends Ophi and Tali. What a beautiful day! I had also planned a memorial tea at a former Japanese internment camp in Canada but had a fairly serious injury. (Thankfully I’m healing up and won’t need surgery.) #teaceremony #chanoyu #tea
#chanoyu for a friend recovering from surgery. Sweets plate is an antique shigaraki saggar. Sweets were yokan made from dried tiger figs and powdered fig leaves from my garden. Shang Dynasty Gu hanaire. Chashaku is “Empty Shell:”

It sang itself
Utterly away

This is the Ichijo Ekan Sanso tea house in Kamakura . Personally, I would be so nervous performing tema on that surface.

My beautiful niece, Rachel, asked if we could do tea during her latest visit. She is pretty much a human mermaid, lives on the beach, and is constantly compared to Ariel, so an oceanic theme was definitely called for. Such a delight! ❤️☀️🌊🐚🧜♀️

Today's tea class. Scroll says Mu. Nothingness. Tea scoop was named Fu-Ki Wealth and Honor from the Ryokan poem Wealth and Honor are only dust. Meaning everything you have in this life is from seeds you planted in your previous life so continue to plant seeds in this one. #Urasenke #chanoyu #tea
Today's tea class. The scroll says 100 Flowers Dance meaning the Spring wind blowing through 10,000 countries (=everywhere) lets 100 flowers dance or a flower blooms for us to know Spring has come everywhere. Calligrapher female Suyiho. #teaceremony #chanoyu #Urasenke
Side of bowl showing a red stripe where the surface transitions from smooth to cratered.
Front of teabowl showing the moon-like cratering in the glaze. I had to do a lot of cleanup with a grinder to make the surface smooth enough to use.

Raku-style bowl. "Dark Side of the Moon". Lots of mixed feelings about this one.

The foot was carved to be slightly concave, an intentional reference to some of the famous Korean Ido bowls.
Another view of the carved foot.
There are a few glaze defects that will have to be addressed with lacquer and gold, but the end result will be worth the effort.
Teabowl. Black clay with wood ash nuka. Hand formed thick and carved. Thinking about which bowls I want to submit to the KC Clay Guild Teabowl National and this style seems right as it feels like my own. Interested in your thoughts.

I hosted a tea ceremony to honor teachers, and then later that night we all went to Butoh at Yume Japanese Gardens. Such a blessing to have this in Tucson.

Bowl with very rough exterior. Thrown thick, allowed to dry to leather hard, then cut with a razor and the clay torn away.
Bowl-like-thing. Black clay thrown thick and carved. Tenmoku liner. Wood-salt fired. Looks like a chunk of basalt.
Struggling to call this a teabowl because it would shred a chakin in a nanosecond, but as a sculptural piece, it works well.

This is my tea house I build 13 years ago in my backyard in Portland Oregon. We study tea every Thursday there and love it. It is named Masayume True Dream a Dream that later comes true. So grateful to have it and tea practice. #chanoyu #teaceremony #Japaneseteaceremony #Uresenke

Thursdays we have tea class in my tea house. These are photos of the tokonoma from yesterday. The scroll says Have A Bowl Of Tea. It is about the equanimity of all states of being. The flowers are what is blooming in my garden this time of year. #teaceremony #chanoyu #Urasenke

Front of teabowl showing salmon-pink flashing and blue, grey and green ash deposits.
Interior of chawan showing chadamari and crawling shino glaze. It took me a really long time to be OK with crawling interiors.
Foot of chawan, minimally carved. I use a "pinch and throw" technique on a banding wheel to form this style of bowl, then apply two layers of sanded, contrasting slips to create the texture.
