It was designed by Robert Adam as an 'eye-catcher' at the end of Hamilton Palace's south avenue, and was built in between 1732 and 1743. This is just one wing of what the Adam jokingly referred to as 'The Dog Kennel'.

A view down a deep wooded valley to a broad river, just prior to sunset. The river runs straight away from the camera at left, flanked by trees; the trees on the right bank seem more natural. At right a high, old bridge crosses the river, which is itself out of sight and obscured by the slope and nearby vegetation. Beyond the bridge one can make out ruins of a castle (Cadzow). There are a few bare trees sticking up into a sky which is gradually taking on dusky ochre and gold colouration.
Visited Chatelherault Country Park (near Hamilton, South of Glasgow) today. Part of Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve, it's a deep wooded valley of broadleaf woodland, some semi-natural and some regenerating after the post-WWII plantation […]

One of those former colliery sites where the current landscape yields few clues - Fernirgair pits 1 & 2. Mining allegedly undermined #Chatelherault and intensive interconnections to old workings made ventilation problematic. Nationalised and immediately closed #Coal #MiningLandscapes #MiningHistory
