A waterfall marks the beginning of Cheonggeyecheong Stream in Seoul, South Korea. The skyline is visible in the background. A stream used to run approximately along the path of the modern day stream. After WWII, Seoul and Korea rapidly modernized. The stream was replaced by an elevated highway. By early in the 21st Century, the highway was an eyesore, effecting quality of life in the blocks near it, as well as polluting the air. And it did not even improve traffic. The city government decided to tear down the highway and replace it with an urban oasis. The result was Cheonggeyecheong Stream, one of the premier examples of the repurposing of a former site. Only the High Line in New York City compares. The stream runs for more than 6 miles through downtown Seoul. Catfish and smaller fish swim in the water; herons and egrets eat the fish, and smaller birds alight in trees along the paths the run on either side of the stream. The people of Seoul and many visitors flock to it. On warm weekend nights, the paths are so crowded with strollers that traffic jams occur. So, when you visit Seoul, never mind the Royal Palace or the bars and restaurants, make Cheonggeyecheong Stream your first stop. And you'll go back to it again and again.
