Want to stop AI training on your research?
Think a CC BY-NC-ND license will help?
Think again! @creativecommons.bsky.social says restrictive licenses donβt block AI training but do limit:
- rapid dissemination
- rigorous review
- equitable access

Why should I make my research open?π€·
@creativecommons.bsky.social says:
CC BY lets you keep copyright whilst your work can be:
β’ Translated into other languages
β’ Adapted for education
β’ Used on Wikipedia
Open research = greater reach and impact! πβ¨

Aghhh, what licence should I choose?! π©
@creativecommons.bsky.social make it simple:
CC BY is the least restrictive = maximises reuse & cuts legal hassle
CC BY lets others:
β
Share your work
π§ Adapt it
#OpenLicensing = more innovation π

Open licenses power discovery!
Melissa Harrison shares a @opentargets.org use case:
Open Targets identifies and prioritises drug targets using AI to extract gene, drug, and disease mentions and relationships to building drug development evidence

Open licenses power discovery!
Melissa Harrison shares a @pfamdb.bsky.social use case:
Pfam uses AI to extract information about known protein domains
This helps predict protein function & identify potential drug targets! π

Licensing of articles in Europe PMC: 5.5 M CCO/CC-BY-SA/CC-BY Licenses for which free text available for derivative of commercial use. 7M open access full text which are free full text available as XML bulk download under a Creative Commons license, or similar. 10.8M free full text where the free full text in Europe PMC is read and display only. And 46.2M records where full text may be available elsewhere via Unpaywall integration.
How does licensing affect innovation?
Melissa Harrison from @ebi.embl.org breaks it down with #EuropePMC stats:
β’ 10.8M full text = read only
β’ 7M full text = downloadable by XML
β’ 5.5M full text = open for reuse, including text-mining!

EMBL's current Open Science Policy. 1. Deposit a preprint 2. Publish Open access with a CC BY license 3. Link publications to ORCIS during submission 4. Deposit in EPMC. 5. Standard EMBL affiliation acknowledgement.
Katherine Hughes on EMBLβs Open Science Policy:
EMBL's policy can serve as a model policy and an example of #OpenScience in practice
