Dear President Mangelsdorf, members of the Board of Trustees, and all University of Rochester administrators, International students are a vital part of the University of Rochester community. The inclusion of people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, languages and geographical locations is integral to the fabric of our school. Without our international students, the University of Rochester would lose much of its richness and academic fullness. In light of the recent actions of the current administration against Harvard and its ability to host international students, it is more important than ever to stand firm in the face of these threats against academic freedom. A threat like this against an institution like Harvard is a threat against all institutions of higher learning and their freedom to educate. I am calling on the University administration to unequivocally reject any demands from the US administration that threaten the academic freedom of students and faculty at the University of Rochester and across the country. I am calling on the University of Rochester to join Harvard and other institutions of higher learning to defend our international students and their right to learn and express their ideas freely. If we falter in the defense of the free exchange of ideas from a multitude of backgrounds, we risk losing everything that we value. Please put the ideals you taught us into practice.
