'Fallen into the cracks': Many territory-era Black settlements forgotten in record Before it was a state, Oklahoma had several all-Black settlements that faded from memory after the Land Run of 1889.

Long before #ClevelandCounty took shape and #Norman and Lexington were fixed on the map, a small Black settlement stood along the #CanadianRiver near Chouteau Creek. But as white settlement expanded, the community faded from maps and memory.

The photo depicts a storefront with large display windows showcasing various dresses and clothing items. The window is labeled "SECOND HAND CLOTHING," indicating the type of goods being sold inside. To the right, there's an advertisement for short-time loans in bold letters against a white backdrop within another part of the store’s glass facade. Below this sign are smaller texts mentioning different loan terms such as "ROOMS 25-7019'S" and "Short-Term Loans," suggesting financial services offered by the establishment.

To the left, there's an additional advertisement in large text that reads "COMMERCIAL COMMODITY TRUST CO. 304 E. MAIN ST." The building appears to be a commercial space with several other businesses occupying adjacent storefronts or offices.

The image is monochromatic, typical of black-and-white photography from the early-to-mid-20th century. A sign at the bottom left corner reads "BY LANGE," crediting Dorothea Lange as the photographer. In the lower right-hand side, there's a small collection of shoe prints or imprints in grayscale with varying sizes and shapes.

The photograph captures an everyday scene that could be from various cities across America during the early 1900s, reflecting economic activities such as second-hand shopping and lending services prevalent at the time. The black-and-white photograph depicts a rural road leading into the distance through an expansive field, with fields and fences visible on either side. The terrain appears dry and arid, indicative of a prairie landscape or farmland in late summer or early fall, as suggested by the sparse vegetation. A car is seen from the driver's perspective driving down this dirt path, which has tire tracks indicating recent use. In the distance, there are two trees standing alone amidst an otherwise open field, and to one side of the road appears a fence made up of wooden posts with wire running between them. The sky is clear without clouds visible in the image. This photograph carries historical significance as it was taken by Dorothea Lange during her work documenting life on America's western frontier for Farm Security Administration (FSA), which later became part of the Office of War Information and then the Resettlement Administration, also known as the Farm Security Administration (FSA).
