The image shows four deep blue berries highlighted against a background of fern fronds. The plant is Clintonia, sometimes called Blue Bead Lilly. I took this photo on the Boreal Life Trail at the Paul Smiths VIC. Clintonia (named in honor of the former governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton) is a native wildflower that flourishes in a wide variety of habitats in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. It produces small yellow flowers in late spring and porcelain blue berries in mid-summer. It is a member of the Lily Family.

It's Clintonia season again here on northern California's redwood coast.

The bloom cycle is brief, about two weeks, then the blue seed pods form. Then it's a long wait til the next late spring.
