Image: Extract from a large-scale Ordnance Survey map showing the little village of Cockerham, and surrounding fields, roads, buildings and copses. The village is concentrated alongside a road running roughly North-South, with the Manor Inn at the Northern end and a school at the Southern end. To the North is a vicarage, to the North-west Cockerham Hall, to the South-west St Michael's church, and to the South-east Cross Houses and Cocker Houses.

The church of St Michael was once situated at the heart of #Cockerham village. Flooding was a regular problem however, and by the 1700s the settlement had been relocated to higher ground to the Northeast, leaving St Michael’s as the ‘Church in the Fields.’ #OnePlaceStudies #MapMonday

There has been a church on this site at #Cockerham since at least 1134, but the tower with embattled parapet we see today was built in 1586 and the rest of the church rebuilt twice, most recently in 1910-11. Dedicated to St Michael, the church is Grade II* listed. #SteepleSaturday #OnePlaceStudies
