Interestingly the Bobbio Missal *is* ruled, the scribe just doesn't care. Each line of writing does more or less end between two prickings, but it doesn't seem to occur to the scribe to use the ruled lines to establish a baseline.

Here's a nifty feature of this MS that I haven't seen in exactly this form: in the far left margin, outside the prickings, the scribe put guide letter to let the rubricator know what red initials to put at the beginning of the verse lines. #codicology #medievalsky

Interestingly, this MS has quire markings. The quires are numbered in red at the bottom of the last page of each quire. The ruling is incised very deeply in that outside leaf. #codicology

This is a tiny book, which gives me a chance to introduce a new feature: #ComparedtoCappelli! The Bobbio Missal is approximately 3 ¾" wide and 7 ¼" tall. That's an inch narrower than Cappelli and just a little bit taller. #paleography #codicology

Today's teachable codicological tidbit + calendar of saints entry: Today is the feast of Paulinus of Aquileia. Here is the opening of his Liber exhortationis in St. Gall 138, p. 2, with *very* clear pricking and ruling. The MS was written at St. Gall ca. 900. #manuscripts #codicology #paleography
