How evolution shapes color diversity in coral reef fish Why does a Caribbean angelfish sometimes resemble its Indo-Pacific cousin, even though they have never lived in the same ocean? Why do coral reefs harbor such a wide range of stripes, spots and…

This underwater photograph taken in the Philippines shows two Grey Bearded Dwarf Gobies (Trimma cf. cana) nestled among yellow-brown coral branches. These tiny fish have reddish-orange bodies with distinctive bright blue-green eyes. One goby faces the camera, seemingly with a pouting or serious expression, while the other is tucked deeper into the coral, peering outward. The coral’s structure and lighting frame them in a warm, intimate underwater scene. Photo by Gregory Rothman, 2025.

Parrotfish support healthy coral reefs, but they’re not a cure-all, and sometimes cause harm A widely held view in ocean conservation asserts that parrotfish are key to healthy coral reefs. But evidence suggests that the relationship is more complicated.

Shoals of Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) - their jaws bizarrely held agape - are an exciting part of the Snoopy Island coral reef ecosystem.
Plenty of Hornlip Mullet (Plicomugil labiosus) cruise around too.

Blackspot Sweepers (Pempheris oualensis) are the common ones at Snoopy Island, including these super cute babies by the breakwater.
But in 2018 I did also spot Vanikoro Sweeper (P. vanicolensis) (Lower R.).
