Lors de la visite "les femmes influentes d'Écosse" le guide a mentionné les "Killing Times". Ce nom désignent une période sombre de l’histoire écossaise, entre 1680 et 1688, marquée par une violente répression contre les presbytériens covenanters. Ces protestants écossais s’opposaient à l’ingérence de la monarchie dans les affaires religieuses, notamment à l’imposition d'une autorité religieuse intermédiaire entre les croyants protestants et Dieu. 
Cette règle concernant les croyances religieuses ont initialement été instaurées par les rois Charles II et Jacques VII d’Écosse.

Les covenanters, accusés de trahison pour avoir refusé de prêter serment d’allégeance au roi en tant que chef suprême de l’Église, étaient pendus ou fusillés.
Dans ce contexte, Édimbourg devint un lieu d’exécutions publiques. La photo démontre l'endroit exact sur la place du Grassmarket où plusieurs de ces exécutions religieuses étaient faites. Sur le pourtour de ce mémorial, on peut y lire " On this spot many martyrs and covenanters died for the protestant Faith". 

Cette période est aujourd’hui perçue comme un symbole fort de résistance et de la lutte pour la liberté de conscience religieuse en Écosse.

I think the Irish (& others) would argue that there was a certain uprising that happened of some significance too. The next war happened in 1641, not 42, and as with the Bishops' Wars, all 3x kingdoms were involved.

In town for a day or two. This view never gets old for me. A #castle which has held out for nearly a year at a time (1640 by Patrick Ruthven), but also been taken in under an hour (1639 by a certain Alexander Leslie).
