To celebrate 32 years of marriage (today) to Alexia Grosjean ( @lexythugcat.bsky.social ), I've decided to remind the historical community of her fabulous book, "An Unofficial Alliance".

A man shooting the word "Lermen" (Lärmen", being noisy) within a printed text.
A tiny man shooting a word nearby, within a printed text of the European past. Welcome to another #rebus broadside of the later so-called #ThirtyYearsWar. A shootin' short 🧵 for #skystorians
The #ThirtyYearsWar tore Central Europe apart, destroying towns, cities, and farmland. What happened to those forced from their homes?

Historical image of Peace of Münster
The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the ongoing Eighty Years' War catastrophically drained Spain. The 1648 Peace of Westphalia (including the Peace of Münster) recognized Dutch independence, marking a decisive shift in European power. #ThirtyYearsWar #PeaceOfWestphalia

The broadside "Des pfaltzgrafen Haußgsind" (VD17 12:671793S), a rebus.
Our messenger is a tiny detail of a broadside published in 1621 Germany, during the later so-called #ThirtyYearsWar. More precisely, our walking detail is part of a printed #rebus with the title "Des pfaltzgrafen Haußgsind".
Yes.
I haven't looked systematically, but my perusing of pamphlet and broadsheet titles suggests that the "Big 3" centennials are the 95 Theses, the Peasants War, and the Augsburg Confession. All have conspicuous #ThirtyYearsWar resonances.
For experts of #milhist, the #ThirtyYearsWar and the #Bauernkrieg, here is access to the broadside with the title:
"Eigentliche Contrafactur und Abriß der vornembsten [O]fficirer und Befelchßhabere/ deß vor hundert Jaren vergangnen Bawrenkriegs ..."

Detail of the broadside "Parallela/ Deß grossen und kleinen Brills/ in Böhmen undd auff dem Rhein" (VD17 1:091943P) showing a giant pair of eyeglasses. The giant pair of glasses is easy to spot in the image part of the print, and represents the city of #Prague and the Catholic party of the contemporary conflict.
And some more words about using eyeglasses as symbols and metaphors in #earlymodern Europe. One could use giant eyeglasses in broadsides to zoom into a topic, like here in a setting of the #ThirtyYearsWar where this giant pair of eyeglasses is used as a visual guide to look into Prague in 1621...
There are many famous examples of looted books and libraries from the Thirty Years’ War.
The Bibliotheca Palatina, for example, was located in Heidelberg until 1623 and one of the most important German Renaissance libraries. It was seized when Catholic troops conquered Electoral Palatine and […]
Libraries and especially princely and religious libraries were a highly sought after war booty, not only during the Thirty Years’ War.
This was not so much due to their material value but their social and cultural capital if one uses Bourdieu’s terminology. Libraries did not solely accumulate […]
Today, on 24 October, is German Library Day. On this day, 377 years ago, the Westphalian peace treaties were signed which ended the Thirty Years' War.
On the one hand, this is just a coincidence in dates. The Germany’s national Library Day commemorates the foundation of the first German public […]
