A high-resolution, moody photograph of the "Cumbria In Verse" book resting on a jagged slab of dark Honister slate. In the background, the blurred, mist-heavy peaks of the Lake District fells under a cold April sky. The focus is sharp on the tactile grain of the book’s cover and the raw, ancient texture of the stone. The lighting is natural and low-contrast, emphasizing the tension between the fragile white paper and the enduring grey rock. Minimalist, earthy, and atmospheric.

A high-detail, moody macro photograph of the book "Cumbria In Verse" by Alden Carrow resting on a jagged, lichen-covered outcrop of dark volcanic rock. A high-contrast, cinematic photograph of Ennerdale Water under a heavy, bruised April sky. The foreground features sharp, geological details of jagged slate and damp moss. In the mid-ground, the dark, still water of the lake reflects the surrounding fells. A single, rusted industrial pipe or a sharp metallic line of infrastructure cuts subtly through the wild shoreline, leading the eye toward a hazy, distant horizon. Muted earth tones, 35mm film grain, capturing the tension between ancient stone and modern industrial utility.

Ennerdale. Wild, rewilded, deliberately restored.
Also: 'tethered to the cooling requirements of Sellafield.' The book holds both without flinching.
That's the only way to write about Cumbria honestly.

A cinematic, moody photograph of Lodore Falls in Cumbria. The focus is on the towering, wet slate crags that lean inward, creating a narrow, resonant stone chamber. The water is a soft, ethereal veil against the dark, jagged rock. Deep greens of moss and ancient ferns cling to the crevices. Low-hanging mist is trapped between the rock faces, blurring the top of the falls. High texture detail on the damp, dark stone surfaces. Atmospheric, somber lighting with a 35mm film aesthetic, capturing the tension between the permanent stone and the fleeting water.

A cinematic, high-detail photograph of a minimalist book cover titled 'Cumbria In Verse' resting on a damp drystone slate wall. In the blurred background, the soft, hazy silhouette of Lake District fells meets the sharp, metallic geometry of a distant industrial crane at a coastal port. A cinematic, wide-angle shot of the Carlisle landscape at twilight. In the foreground, weathered red sandstone blocks from a Roman ruin are partially embedded in a modern dry-stone wall, showing the literal recycling of history. In the mid-ground, the River Eden reflects a bruised, grey Cumbrian sky, its water looking fluid and powerful against the static stone. In the far distance, the industrial silhouette of a factory chimney rises against the horizon. The lighting is moody and atmospheric, emphasizing textures of moss, cold water, and ancient grit. High contrast, melancholic North Yorkshire aesthetic.

The poem I most want to revise:
Carlisle. Two thousand years of border logic. Roman wall used for building stone. Three rivers. Biscuit factory.
'The Eden does not write the law; it erodes it.' One poem. Not enough.

Cinematic, high-detail photography of the Georgian market square in Broughton-in-Furness. Focus on the textures of weathered grey Lakeland slate and lime mortar. The lighting is the pale, diffused gold of a late North England afternoon. No modern vehicles or signage. The composition is symmetrical and grounded, emphasizing the "inward-turning" nature of the architecture. A sense of heavy, permanent stillness contrasted with a light mist clinging to the cobbles. 8k resolution, muted earthy tones, shot on 35mm film style.

A cinematic, wide-angle shot of Swinside Stone Circle in the Duddon Valley at dawn. The lighting is low and moody, highlighting the rough, lichen-encrusted textures of the porphyritic rhyolite stones. Soft moorland mist clings to the grass, contrasting with the permanence of the dark, heavy monoliths. In the background, the rolling, desolate fells of South Cumbria are bathed in a cold, pale light. The composition emphasizes the isolation and the physical "portal" gap in the stones facing the southeast. High detail on the geological grain of the rock, 8k resolution, atmospheric and somber.

A cinematic, high-detail photograph of the limestone pavement at Grange-over-Sands during a grey, overcast afternoon. The Lake District is managed, not natural.
The treeless fells: a grazing decision.
The Herdwick patterns: mitochondrial DNA over centuries. The walls: a land ownership system.
None of this makes it less beautiful.

Three things I got wrong before writing this book:
The fells are not stable. They are slowly collapsing. The Lake District is not natural. It is managed.
The most interesting poem is probably about Wigton.
