An atmospheric, painterly scene of a lone dry-stone wall cutting through a desolate, wintry Lakeland valley. The color palette is restricted to greys, deep browns, and muted ochre. The lighting is low and directional, highlighting the geological weight of the landscape and the isolation of February.
Writing principle I keep:
July shows you what a place wants you to see. February shows what it is.
Every poem in this book is the February version.

A haiku:
A typed poem titled "Pretty" by Irk Irwell. The text reads: I bought my daughter three presents for her ninth birthday. For some reason I thought I'd wrap them really nice. I bought fancy paper and pretty ribbon, YouTubed 'how to tie a pretty ribbon' and tied it something like what she did. My daughter cried because they were so pretty. I sat there, nine years I had been getting away with handing her things exactly as I bought them.
A slight departure from the usual programming. Because sometimes I have nightmares that sound like nursery rhymes.

A poem: Up North
Gold spills through
the window, onto the sofa,
seeping across the floor,
climbing the chair.
Atoms of dust caught
in a shaft of light,
shining like stars
in an afternoon universe.

The cover of Divinations on Survival by Natalie Linh Bolderston against a starry mountain background.
Natalie Linh Bolderston's debut collection traces her matrilineal heritage across continents and centuries, interweaving her voice with those of her mother and grandmother. The poems move between 1930s China, 1970s Vietnam and an ancient landscape populated by mother's, daughters and deities from Vietnamese and Chinese myth. Divinations on Survival asks what it means to share a lineage in the shadow of war, and traces the complex legacies of survival that emerge as a result of conflict. Always returning to the question of how intimate, familial ties are warped and undone by political turmoil, violence and displacement, the collection distils and expands on stories passed down from grandmother to mother, to daughter, and casts women not as victims, but as powerful protectors, healers and survivors. Formally innovative and supple, these poems disrupt and unsettle meaning, confronting the colonising force of language to work towards a radical new poetics.
Divinations on Survival comes out in spring 2026 and can be pre-ordered now. If you would like to book me for a reading, talk or workshop, please feel free to drop me an email: NatalieLinhBolderston@gmail.com

Cover of a poetry pamphlet, the title is "For the hypothetical aliens". It is orange and worn, like an old document folder, and it has some sort of security stamp declaring the contents top have been reclassified "Non sensitive"
View of the whole, opened cover of a poetry pamphlet called "For the hypothetical aliens" and with a logo proclaiming it is from "Literal Fraud Press". It carries the image of fake wear and tear, with particularly deep scratches on the back...
An inside page from a poetry pamphlet showing the start of a poem: _The universe speaks to you_ I - Water... ...flows, but has no thought of flowing. Every droplet of rain free to follow its weird find its level bead the underside of a leaf, the whole nonetheless adding up to moorland brook, burbling here and now and in a single direction. Far downstream, current toys with grit does not imagine things better if this pebble were elsewhere but nags at it wobbles it urges it to move and a mere thousand years later a mighty estuary deltas one side of the continent. The stream meanwhile is cutting a new channel through the limestone ridge. Each molecule is part of something larger and doesn't know or things it knows do not make sense. Water's unfeeling mechanism floods a city or builds an ecosystem and even if the outcome of civilisation is nothing humans comprehend it will be that rich.
