Sometimes the benches full of plants in the sales area at the nursery are just so beautiful.

Cuphea "Starfire" is an easy-care, drought-tolerant perennial in my SoCal garden. See also: prolific bloomer and hummingbird magnet. Not a fan of purple & pink? Try Cuphea "Honeybells" or "Vermillionaire."

A mixed planter of Cuphea ignea (Cigar flower) ‘Hummingbird’s Lunch,’ with Elymus hystrix (Bottlebrush grass) in a pot placed in a fire pit. Hummingbird’s Lunch is a long-blooming cultivar with long, slender red blooms tipped with cream. They are not frost-hardy, but in northern climates can be grown as an annual. They can reach 40-45 cm in one season and bloom from June until the frost! They are highly attractive to hummingbirds, hawkmoths, and other long-tongued insects.
