Today is #DCEmancipationDay, marking when @congress passed & Pres. Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act (1862) to end slavery in the District of Columbia, freeing more than 3,000 individuals, 8 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. emancipation.dc.gov
Today, #DCEmancipationDay, we commemorate the District’s important position as the 1st place where enslaved Black people were freed by federal action.
