I am confused. 🤯 Linked below are some balanced nuanced recommendations on “bad” fats. But they contradict the black and white absolutes of our Nutrition Facts Label #FDAhealthy. And it doesn’t reflect how #SatFat is actually regulated in institution foodservice or the school lunch program #DGA2025
#DGA2025 #Salt Diet Simulations were part of the process for the first time. 100% of simulated diets exceeded the CDRR for sodium across all age, gender, lifestyle groups.
❌ Compliance is not possible given the current American food supply. Personal responsibility requires acceptable options.
#DGA2025 Insufficient evidence on #UPF. A missed opportunity.
Americans are bombarded with conflicting information, looking for guidance, and predisposed to listen. The committee failed to take advantage of this situation - to speak and to be heard. So Americans will look elsewhere ….
Every dietitian should follow the dietary guidelines proceedings at least once. #DGA2025 was my chance to follow the proceedings. Over the last 2 years plus, I’ve spent countless hours listening to 20 PhDs and post docs discuss, debate, and finalize their recommendations.
#DGA2025 Advisory Committee says there’s insufficient evidence to consider including of degree of processing in the next release of our Dietary Guidelines. That’s an accurate statement.
However, it’s not very helpful …
So here’s a good long read on the controversial topic #UPF
Significant correlation exists between an #UPF dietary pattern and adverse health outcomes. The US #DGA2025 Advisory Committee concluded there was insufficient evidence.
However many reputable commentators are urging caution ⚠️
So, how are we to beware? The link below has some good answers …
#DGA2025 The committee recommended that the protein category should start with beans, peas and lentils and move meat to the end of the list.
Are you listening NY restaurants? Finding a bean 🫘 or a pea or a lentil on the menu is like finding a empty seat on a crowded subway. A rare occurrence.
#DGA2025 The conclusion from the committee on food sources of saturated fat was that switching one type of animal-sourced food for another had limited / negligible evidence for benefit.
My take away - we have viable alternatives to the “lean meat” and “fat free cheese”. #NutritionFacts
Vichyssoise is a satisfying winter soup. J. Beard has a good recipe in his American cookbook. Minimally processed potatoes, leeks, home made stock guarantees NOVA compliance #RealFood. Traditional recipes too palatable for #FDAhealthy #DGA2025. Celebrating traditional recipes gets me in trouble.
It’s likely to be a bumpy ride between this recommendation of our Scientific Advisory Committee and the publication of the next Dietary Guidelines for Americans however.

Yes, classifying beans, peas, lentils as a plant based protein source above beef, pork, chicken has been recommended.
However a lot has to happen before the recommendation from #DGA2025 Advisory Committee makes it into the next edition of our Dietary Guidelines.
#DGA2025 - Every dietitian should follow the proceedings at least once. For the last 3 years plus I’ve spent countless hours listening to 20 PhD members discuss, debate, and finalize their recommendations. These 3 topics were the most relevant for me: 1) #UPF 2) Diet Simulations 3) Saturated Fat.
My comments #DGA2025
✔️ #UPF
The Committee missed an opportunity to speak & to be HEARD. American will listen to others sources now.
✔️Data Simulations.
Americans don’t follow the guidelines. Lack of compliance is NOT however simply personal choice when NO available items are available. #sodium CDRR
