I am confused. 🤯 Linked below are some balanced nuanced recommendations on “bad” fats. But they contradict the black and white absolutes of our Nutrition Facts Label #FDAhealthy. And it doesn’t reflect how #SatFat is actually regulated in institution foodservice or the school lunch program #DGA2025
Whole baked black sea bass - with fennel, potatoes, olives, herbs, side dish 🫘 from the restaurant we ate at last night. Too much fish, so took some back home. #RealFood #FDAhealthy #Salt
Is it a healthy? Depends on what you’re counting …

The FDA threshold for #AddedSugar is set so low, fruit 🍏🥭🍊is the only healthy sweet to have for dessert 🎂🍰. It’s the only #FDAhealthy threshold that I’m okay with. Having a “real” dessert once a week or a celebration meal would be a positive change. Always better to eat #RealFood instead of #UPF 🍪🍩🍦
NOVA is a useful heuristic for identifying #RealFood. Now that
the FDA requires a “meaningful amount” to use the word healthy on food product labels. It’s a positive step in the right direction and confirms the need to assess food before assessing nutrients. #FDAhealthy,
The US FDA has gotten very busing as we approach the day when the new administration take over. Much of the rest of the world already requires Front of the Package (FOP) labels to alert consumers to food products high in #Salt #SatFat #AddedSugar. #FDAhealthy
Could take a decade or more …
#FDAhealthy The foundation of a healthy dietary pattern should be based on nutrient dense foods. But when it comes to soup however, sometimes I skip the nutrient dense part.
I’m adamant about NOVA compliant minimally processed #RealFood ingredients. So what’s my problem? 🧂I #Salt to my taste.
Good review of reactions on the announcement yesterday. Seems like lots of stakeholders are displeased with the proposed FOP label from our FDA. #Fats #Salt #AddedSugar #FDAhealthy
Hard to know if any ordinary folks are paying much attention however.

Our FDA has stated they are aware of relatively recent studies on the effects of different sources of saturated fat, such as dairy. There’s a growing evidence base that whole milk, artisan cheese, full fat plain yogurt are neutral, even protective. Maybe in another 15 years … #fats #FDAhealthy

Vichyssoise is a satisfying winter soup. J. Beard has a good recipe in his American cookbook. Minimally processed potatoes, leeks, home made stock guarantees NOVA compliance #RealFood. Traditional recipes too palatable for #FDAhealthy #DGA2025. Celebrating traditional recipes gets me in trouble.
It’s likely to be a bumpy ride between this recommendation of our Scientific Advisory Committee and the publication of the next Dietary Guidelines for Americans however.

Good summary statement of #FDAhealthy. No mention NOVA / #UPF in the 102 pages. However, the focus is shifting away from nutrients moving towards food #RealFood.
FDA’s Final Rule on the Implied Nutrient Content Claim “Healthy” Maintains Focus on Foods Rather than on Nutrients www.thefdalawblog.com
Learning the FDA Final Rule for using the word “healthy” on food product labels is ingredient specific.
Saturated fatty acids in seafood, nuts, seeds, soy don’t get counted. Other saturated fatty acids from milk, animal based products, seed and fruit oils do get counted. #FDAhealthy #HSSS #RealFood
⚠️FDA needed 8 years, 100 pages, and 125,000 words to revise the use of the word “healthy” on food product labels - Federal Register 12/27/24. #FDAhealthy
Wonder how long it took these dictionary editors ⬇️
✅This is the @MerriamWebster definition of 'healthy' www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/h...
Beautifully photographed delicious example of a NOVA compliant traditional dessert. 😋🍴
Made with ingredients from Group 1 (wheat flour, nuts, eggs, raspberry, lemon zest) and Group 2 (sugar, butter). Probably not so healthy from a #HFSS perspective. #UPF #FDAhealthy

Here’s what I have always wondered. Let’s say the Nutrition Label lists a portion which is equal to the RACC (Reference Amount Customarily Consumed). And let’s say that amount qualifies as “healthy“. If I am hungry and eat more, does that larger amount still count as healthy? #FDAhealthy
Guess what happened today? FDA published the final rule for the use of the word “healthy” on food product labels! 🙏
