Imagine how it must have felt driving on the Arroyo Seco Parkway into #DLTA knowing that you’ll soon be breathing in all the stinky gunk hanging over the city like a shroud. It’s so thick you can almost taste it through your screen! This photo was taken on January 13, 1948.
Looking north toward RKO Hillstreet Theatre at 801 S. Hill St #DLTA. This photo was taken in 1939, when the studio was having a banner year, with “Gunga Din”, “Love Affair”, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Then again, in 1939, all the studios were having a banner year.
I love finding color shots of Angels Flight funicular in #DLTA because it shows us how vibrantly orange the stations are. Apparently, that sleek green car entering the Hill St/3rd St intersection is a 1950 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe, so I’m calling this photo circa early 1950s. (now photo May 2024)

Hollywood's reigning "it" couple of the 1920s, Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks filmed “Taming of the Screw” in 1929 (the 1st feature-length, sound adaptation of any Shakespeare work.) It ran at the United Artist Theatre, 929 S. Broadway #DLTA. This photo is circa Nov 1929. ("now" photo May 2024)
This side view of Angels Flight funicular with a truck parked on Clay St (which doesn’t exist anymore) and that house right next door reminds us how tightly packed everything was around Angels Flight. #DLTA circa mid-to-late 1950s

Living in car-centric LA, it cheers my bicycle-loving heart to know that once upon a forever ago, Angelenos had their own dedicated bicycle “freeway.” It was called the California Cycleway and it connected Pasadena with #DLTA in 1900. (The caption dated this photo at 1898.)
Color photo looking across Pershing Square, #DLTA, 1965. It was taken 13 years after park was excavated in to build an underground parking garage. In that process it lost all its greenery and shade trees. Instead, it gained some lawn, a few new trees, and 5-globe streetlights. ("now" photo May 2024)
Looking north toward Main & Spring #DLTA circa I’m guessing 1900. Lots of room for those horse-drawn carriages to move out of the way of that streetcar. I love that blurry little girl in the big white bonnet. I hope she knew how to dodge runaway horses—and their calling cards. (now photo June 2022)
