🌎 Ringed Teal (Callonetta leucophrys)

The Ringed Teal is a small South American duck. Males are brightly coloured with a salmon breast, chestnut back, and a black line on a pale head. Females are generally browner with a striped head. Found in wetlands and forests of central South America (e.g., Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay). They are "dabbling ducks," feeding at the surface, but are also "perching ducks" with claws adapted for sitting in trees, where they often nest in hollows. They form strong pair bonds. No subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: Since they nest in tree cavities, often high off the ground, the ducklings must take a dramatic "leap of faith" out of the nest to follow their parents to the water below.

🌏 Australian wood duck (Chenonetta jubata) ♀

The Australian wood duck, maned duck, or maned goose is a medium-sized duck resembling a small goose. Females have brown heads with distinct white stripes above and below their eyes, and mottled underparts. Males feature a dark brown head with a small mane, a grey body, and a mottled breast. They are widely distributed across mainland Australia, favouring grasslands, woodlands, and shallow wetlands. Unlike many ducks, they primarily graze on land, often in flocks, and are frequently seen perching in trees. Their calls include croaky "gnow" sounds, with females having a louder, rising call.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
