The Kamakura Daibutsu holds his meditative gaze above the crowd — pilgrims, tourists, schoolchildren — all briefly orbiting something far older than their reasons for being there. The stone stele reads 国宝鎌倉大仏, National Treasure, Great Buddha of Kamakura. The forested hill behind him has always been there. So, it seems, has he.

A small store behind Hannya-ji, cashing in on Nara's famous daibutsu (大仏), has created a 'Great Buddha soda'. The big ball of hair is cotton candy, which can be eaten or used to sweeten the (already sweet) drink🤪🥤

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu) is a large bronze statue of Amitābha, located on the temple grounds. Including the base, it measures 13.35 metres (43.8 ft) tall and weighs approximately 93 tonnes (103 tons). According to temple records, the statue dates from around 1252, during the Kamakura period, which it is named after.
