While participating in a record swap today in the East Bay I inevitably came home with some new bargain buys such as this #DavidStoneMartin cover for a 1954 Charlie Barnet EP. Seems this was repurposed on a 12" LP in 1955, which I've never seen anywhere either. #musicsky #jazzsky #music
"Journey Into Love" sounds like a post-humous Jimi Hendrix release, but its a 1954 EP by drummer Louis Bellson, showcasing his schmaltzy writing skills. Good players save the day: Ellington trombonist Juan Tizol & alto saxman Willie Smith. Scored at Amoeba for its David Stone Martin cover which I'd not seen anywhere before. Apparently there is an LP counterpart which I'll seek out. DSM did some 400 covers in his lifetime so I'm not surprised to find new ones (I have more than 200 at last count a couple years back). Sebastian the sophisticate bunny protects sensitive algorithmic eyes here, which is a shame as its a fascinating surrealist DSM illustration.

Last spin for the night is a very rare (probably) late 1940s/early 1950s 12-inch 78 RPM set by 20th Century classical composer Alan Hovhaness on Moses Asch's "Disc" record label. This cover art is by David Stone Martin, which many of you know I collect (he did some 400 album covers in his lifetime). Never have seen this anywhere or knew of its existence. In lovely condition too!

Does record collecting get any more obscure, international or beautiful than this bargyn bin find at Grooves Records today? Lovely 1954 recordings by French-American harpist Carlos Salzedo with cover art by David Stone Martin. Australian release. If it was released in the US, it is super obscure as I've never come across it (but then I haven't been looking for harp duets!). Zero copies listed on Discogs or eBay. Likely from the early 1960s.

‘Walter Braden "Jack" Finney was an American writer. His best-known works are science fiction and thrillers, including The Body Snatchers and Time and Again. The former was the basis for the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers and its remakes.’ Wikipedia full issue at https://archive.org/details/colliersmagazine

Easing into Saturday in a reflective mood (which I need to morph into productive!) with this 1974 John Coltrane LP: Alternate Takes. The 1st Trane album I ever bought in the mid-70s, it remains a favorite. I love the LPs these sessions were culled from (Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz, etc.), but these versions are etched into my musical DNA. Apparently this cover art is the only Coltrane portrait David Stone Martin made and one of the only ones he made for Atlantic Records (as far as I know).

Remarkably uplifting album of mid-50s takes by BeBop legend (and apparent Monk protege, something I just learned). Cover artist David Stone Martin seemed to portray' Powell's known mental challenges in fairly heavy drawings. Found this minty 1981 Japanese reissue at the flea market for a fiver. I'd like to find a pre-Verve label Norgran Records original (same art, in yellow).

Mono Monday : Now playing The President Plays With The Oscar Peterson Trio. 1956. Lester Young in fine form. Cover by David Stone Martin. I don't know why they later changed this cover design… The re-issue is pretty awful.
