For various reasons I don’t think we could put one along the full length of our current fence, but I hope we can make it work somehow. And meanwhile that Yardenalities webinar the other day gave me ideas for how to transition from dead hedge to fencing where we might need to.

Did u know?A great use of old branches is to make them into a dead hedge. I weave my old large branches into the fabric of my rose arch. It minimises trips to the tip & creates a handy cat barrier, allowing birds to feed safely on seed we put down. Go on,go weave. It's fun to do too #deadhedge 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🐦⬛

Note the #DeadHedge created to the west of the Oak.
Reusing/redirecting materials that otherwise require burning or landfill space and/or demand resource use for disposal is one of many benefits of a #deadhedge. For me, they’re restful to my eyes as well. We hope to incorporate one into our little landscape somehow.

Don't burn the brush pile. Build a dead hedge and let nature handle the rest!

This Beech #Tree has a #DeadHedge “Crown”, using the side branches, twigs and of course the rotten bits of the fallen Lime that has many insect burrows in it.
Should act as a good mulch, further guard from deer but most importantly a very substantial #Insect habitat and nesting site for #birds.
Volunteer Matthew Corser has been busy constructing a dead hedge to protect our growing trees.
Hear him talk about the process of creating them and learn more about how they deter the cheeky 🦌 local wildlife of Selborne!

It can be built gradually over time using prunings from hedges, fruit trees, and #ornamental #shrubs. 👍🏻
Vorher-nachher-Bild.

It will of course add another green corridor for Mount Briscoe’s biodiversity.
Have a great weekend folks.

I started creating a dead hedge today to hide the collection of old barn wood at our “big kids camp.” I recently removed a large amount of privet from our forest and had a big brush pile to pull from.

Planted some wild honeysuckle at the allotment today. Hoping it will grow up over the "dead hedge" which I made for frens 🦔🐸🪲🕷🐦

This is a #deadhedge. I saw something about this on the net and decided to give it a try. The point of deadhedging is to attract & support insects. This pillar in my yard is about 7 months old. As the pile composts, just add more. Make #deadhedging trendy in 2025! 😃 #risuaita #Biodiversitymatters
Dead Hedge. Green and silver t-posts are featured every 4 feet, 18" apart, with dead branches and tree trunks stacked between them.
Earlier this week I experimentally built an eight foot section of a dead hedge. This is a technique for fencing that also provides habitat for the ecosystem. I'm nowhere near an expert on it, but it was quick, super cheap, and seems like it might be worthwhile on a larger scale.

A dead hedge is a wonderful habitat that’s full of life. Dead hedges provide hiding places and nesting habitats for all sorts of creatures, as well as food for insects. See RSPB guide here: https://shorturl.at/yinHm
#RSPB Guide on how to build a #DeadHedge. Suitable for most garden spaces. Can be built up bit by bit, whenever you do a little pruning and you can incorporate hedgehog shelter or open fronted nest boxes to extend this habitat. #WildlifeGarden #BiodiversityGarden.
