Just read a horrific bit in Christie's #DeathInTheClouds, set in 1935. A beautician and dentist are flirting on their first date. The narration casually mentions they both "disliked loud voices, noisy restaurants and negroes". This is not intended to make them seem unsympathetic in any way.
