A North American mammal skull

Good morning. In #deskDetritus today we have another North American mammal skull. Water rotted in northern Ontario🇨🇦. I lost the mandible in the process.

I have two jumping spiders that live in my #DeskDetritus. One visited the monitor during a rewriting session. I was able to get it to hunt the mouse cursor. Great writing break. 🧪

The #deskDetritus spans a long time temporally and intellectually. When the amazing @sbcrofts.bsky.social was doing her dissertation on crushing teeth I wondered if photoelasticty could tell us how cusps are loaded. The short answer is yes. But boy is it hard to interpret on shapes like this.

My #DeskDetritus includes a couple of hummingbird nests I've found (on the ground).

Label is for the undergrad students that kept asking if it was marijuana.

You may wonder about my #DeskDetritus antecedents. How did I get here? This is from my mother's desk. A shed test from a Limulus (horseshoe crab).

My mom is an artist. Her detritus is better than mine.

Here is an odd bit of #DeskDetritus. An unpaired bone from a walrus. The Os Baculum, or penis bone is called an oosik.

I do think biologists have the best #DeskDetritus. Here are a couple of giant 3D printed fish teeth from @karlycohen.bsky.social work on homodonty.

Maybe the oldest #DeskDetritus is this 3D printed cross section of a cownose ray jaw. It shows the mineralized trabeculae that formed the basis of my PhD. I found these struts about 18 months before I defended, so they became my dissertation.

The latest episode of #DeskDetritus is a 3D printout in gray PETG of a new species of blenny with a lovely little topknot -Acanthemblemaria aceroi. I print a skull of each little fish I have helped to describe - handy since none have been longer than 25mm total length.

One of my older pieces of #DeskDetritus is this 3d print of the head of Belator an armored gurnard. I have added an eye that blinks because it entertains me.
This dates to when @adafruit.com sold subscription boxes with cool weird electronics.

Three teeth from a six gill shark.

Here is an oddball #DeskDetritus. @kacorn.bsky.social's paper on Jawzall, a tool for measuring dynamic function of shark teeth, used teeth from a six gill that stranded near the labs. A few are still on my desk. Including the symphysial.

A return to #DeskDetritus. This clay sculpture by @fernandaoyarzun.bsky.social has the DNA sequence of the fish that modeled for the sculpture.

And now I no longer need any streaming services. #DeskDetritus is all I need. Fascinating.

Here’s the skull of one of the nine banded armadillos that provided tissue for my dissertation, still hanging out in my office 27 year later. #DeskDetritus

My favorite piece of #deskdetritus is definitely the puffin I picked up on our honeymoon—maybe not a shorebird, but certainly cute!

I have spent 20 years messing around with clingfish. I love them. Dr. Molly Grear, an engineer and knitter, made me this yarn clinger complete with fins and disk. She also knits female scientists.

In today's #DeskDetritus entry two pictures of the same snake 5 years apart. The 18 foot Burmese python belonged to Al Richmond. Beth Brainerd, my PhD advisor, and a bunch of her students and in the later image many of us have graduated and the snake is now a tanned hide.

In this installment of #DeskDetritus a skeleton that was used to bait a lander trap in the Atacama Trench. This went to 7800m and lured in isopods and other hadal inverts. Given to me by Mackenzie Gerringer.
