In conclusion I hold this movie dearly in my heart but it is a really painful watch. The whole movie feels like a love declaration and I wish the director would have had a happy ending like in the movie.

I watched this as someone who didn’t grow up in Taiwan, under martial law, or in a Catholic boys’ school. I see the film from relative safety (able to talk about it publicly) while the #directorPatrickLiu lived through that oppression and turned his own first love into art.

I liked that some scenes moved quites slowely and the way the world around them was portrayed. The lesson that I took away from the movie was that even if you try to surpress who you are, it will only end up hurting not just yourself but also the people around you.
