Because of the ridiculous decision from #dovecot, replication between two servers won't be possible anymore.

I have - against all advices - ran my own mail server since 2019. It has served me and my family pretty well over these years.

Now it's time to migrate. And that's painful.

It looks […]

TIL (at 3 am): Upgrading Dovecot is not fun when the behavior changes a lot. Took several hours to get it running identical to before. But at least I could remove some old configuration parts.

Got Dovecot converted to a 2.4.x configuration the other day on one of my servers (after Many hours). Docs still seem pretty bad for 2.4, so maybe this will help someone.

sni mit #ispconfig ist ein wenig tricky, aber es funktioniert. Ab Version 3.3.1 von ISPConfig wird #dovecot unterstützt, und daher muss das Shell Script entsprechend angepasst werden.

Do you hate #passwords as much as I do?
Can't we have public key #authentication everywhere? Like in my #email client?

Yes we can! Without #authkeys!

Because #TLS supports not just #server side #certificates , but also the client can be verified.

My #Dovecot now logs me in without a password […]

Today at 1am I noticed that my mail server wasn't working well since 2 weeks and that lead to a fun quest about fixing it that took me a few hours.
I'm not working theses days as i'm starting a new job in 1 month so I had time to dig to fix it...

The visible symptom was that gmail wasn't able […]

Love updating my #ArchLinux #VServer.
Especially when there are Major Version Upgrades.
Like #postgresl so that my rssfeeder or #matrix Server stopped working.
And upgrading databases are always fun.

But even worse with #dovecot and anything mail/ #postfix related.

FUN two days

Uff da...

So, there's this server-side #email access tool called #dovecot. It's used for IMAP/POP (they're mail protocols, don't worry about it if you don't know what they are) mail pickup, and especially mail pickup for virtual users (users who have a _mailbox_ but no actual _account_ on the […]

By the 20th Century, the dovecot found itself on the grounds of a sewage treatment works. It was moved to its currently location (whcih is not particularly easy to access) in 2000 to make way for a new road.

It seems the migration from #Dovecot 2.3 to 2.4 is sufficiently bad that not upgrading, EVER, is a much better bet.

Arbitrary changes, no backward compatibility.

I pity anyone using it with like, a million users.

And they don't like maildir any more. The one good thing DJB came out with.

Heads up if you use #Dovecot as local delivery agent with #Postfix and upgrade to Dovecot to 2.4 (e.g. because you go to #Debian trixie):

Dovecot 2.3 -> 2.4 has incompatible configuration changes. These cause the dovecot-lda to fail. That causes postfix to reject/bounce(!) incoming email until […]

I’ve come across several of these recently, but this is the first I’ve been able to get to, standing in the middle of a field. Helpfully, but rather sadly, it’s lost its roof, revealing its purpose: a doocot (a dovecote if you’re not Scottish).
