The treasonous Frenchman was Major Ferdinand Esterhazy. He was passing French military secrets to the Germans. To cover up this treason, the military tried to pin it on Alfred Dreyfus, an active-duty Captain with Jewish ancestry. This was the Dreyfus Affair and it roiled French and European politics for more than a decade.

In addition to accusing top military officials of covering up the treason, Emile Zola’s open letter laid out some details that would exonerate Dreyfus, but were not being reported by media loyal to the military, which, at the time, were most media. Other investigations followed and unearthed the breadth of the cover up, but it took some time to ferret out the truth. In that time, Zola was accused of libel and put on trial. He fled to England for nearly a year until the French courts and public opinion swung toward exonerating both Dreyfus and Zola.

It’s hard to overstate the impact of the Dreyfus Affair. It formed entrenched ideological camps – anti-Semitic nationalists, the Catholic Church, and militarists on one side and academics, artists, and writers on the other.
The Dreyfus Affair, the Russian pogroms of this time and other public demonstrations of anti-Semitism led Theodor Herzl to begin his Zionist campaign calling for the creation of a Jewish state that could protect Jewish people.
On the 100th Anniversary of Zola’s "J’accuse!," the French Catholic newspaper "La Croix" published an apology for its anti-Semitic editorials during the Dreyfus Affair.

On this day in 1898, French author and intellectual Emile Zola published "J’accuse!" It was an open letter on the front page of a liberal, Paris newspaper and it claimed – accurately – that the French military was covering up treason by a well-connected officer.

The #Epstein scandal is this era's #Dreyfusaffair, though vaster in scale. We won't know all of it for years, but it's bigger even than Trump's monstrous behavior. This is an entire tranche of aristocrats, beyond political affiliations, beyond good and evil. These are people who believe that no […]

French-Jewish artillery captain #AlfredDreyfus was wrongly convicted of treason in a military court on #ThisDayInHistory in 1894. No evidence was presented; the #DreyfusAffair was #Judeophobic scapegoating for the #FrancoPrussianWar loss & a clear example of French #antisemitism.

It is telling that the first derisive use of the word “intellectual” as a part of political speech was by the anti-semites in the French Army during the #DreyfusAffair that very nearly tore France apart at the turn of the 19th century.
