We remember the 85th anniversary of the evacuation of 338,000 troops from the beaches of Dunkirk between 26th May - 4th June 1940. Operation Dynamo was to become one of the critical turning points of WW2. Churchill called it the ‘ miracle of deliverance’.

On this day, Lord Halifax argued with Churchill for a negotiated peace with Germany.
Later, the PM says, "The House should prepare itself for hard and heavy tidings. Of course, whatever happens at Dunkirk, we shall fight on." (Churchill, 28 May 1940)

85 years ago today #OperationDynamo had started. Hundreds of thousands were trapped, thousands had already been on a fighting retreat for days, many would be ordered to stay, many would volunteer to stay, many would never come home. The miracle of #Dunkirk had begun. #Dunkirk85
It’s the 85th Anniversary of Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk which began #OTD in 1940. More than 338,000 were taken off, most of them from the Dunkirk Mole, for me one of the most evocative places on that battlefield. #Dunkirk85
OTD 85 years ago. My Gt Uncle Jack as Coxswain of HMS Gulzar (pictured) rescued the last 47 British troops from Calais under gunfire. A day later he took part in Op Dynamo at Dunkirk rescuing 500. #Dunkirk85 #Dynamo
In May 1940 #OperationDynamo sent hundreds of #LittleShips to #Dunkirk to rescue the British Army from French beaches
They were helped in the air by #spitfires from #RAFManston and many other RAF stations on the South coast

At dawn, the Little Ships set sail from Ramsgate in honour of those who assisted in the evacuation of Dunkirk. From 26 May to 4 June 1940, about 850 private boats braved enemy fire to rescue over 338,000 troops. "The Miracle of Dunkirk" was a turning point in WW2. #OpDynamo85 #Dunkirk85
In remembrance of Dunkirk - 85th Anniversary- mentioned in my WW2 poetry book Thunder and Lightning.
