Sunny Sunday = many humans w bikes + dogs in the v few semi-natural open access lands that are short bus rides away from Brighton & Hove so I didn't stay long along #DykeApproach path nor on #DevilsDyke but while there I focussed on the quiet stars that are still flowering & feeding wildlife!

Berry- & insect-laden Hawthorns & other trees around #DevilsDyke were loud w twittering small mixed flocks, feeding on the Autumn bounty.

Late afternoon walk up 2 #DevilsDyke along #DykeApproach path where the magnificent magenta crowns & their cousins where still providing food, their silver seed-heads shelter & perches to a host of insects, among them Grey-backed Snout Hoverfly (Rhingia rostrata).

On this cool-ish & breezy a/noon all the flying creatures along the #DykeApproach path were grabbing any nectar wherever they found it or sheltering/resting in the dry autumnal #chalkgrassland .. while the strip of woodland alongside looked Tolkien-esque through windows framed by #Traveller'sJoy

Personally, I hate its common name, much preferring the old obsolete ones like "Small-flowered Morning Glory" or "Possession Vine", the latter giving it the kudos of owning something.

Breakfast was served this morning to all after yesterday's downpour replenished the rich chalk grassland strips along the #DykeApproach path. It's only a narrow strip between farmland & more farmland & golf courses but acts as a vital #wildlifecorridor. Nature needs many more of these!

#Emperormoth caterpillar .. 5th instar I think .. rescued from the chalk grit of the #DykeApproach path this morning.
Watched it as it trundled into the safety of the grassland away from an endless stream of running shoes and bike wheels.

Along the #DykeApproach path there is an asphalted area that used to be a car park, now abandoned.
Every year I have watched as #resilientnativeplants have found tiny gaps, taken root & moved in to cover the ugly utilitarian road surface with beauty & life 🌱
It was ripe for natural development 😍

At just a few weeks as adults & esp males, having partaken in areal 'dog fights' or dodged being a snack of many, most #butterflies are frayed at best or have parts of their wings missing. #DykeApproach today.

Looking down at my feet & everywhere I walked along #DykeApproach y/day there was #Wall basking, sometimes two & then occasionally as I lifted my gaze I'd spy a frayed male feeding on Greater Knapweed.
Still, I wonder if down here in wall-less #SouthDowns if he quietly calls himself the Path 🙄

Two tiny #BrownArgus mating on a #SaladBurnet flowerhead before the little cascading florets emerge.
Just in front is a mound of #Marjoram (Oregano vulgare), one of the many real butterfly (& other insects) plants flowering at the moment.
A fabulous plant for any wildlife garden!
