I helped @petersankoff put together Aotearoa’s first textbook on animal welfare law.
If you think our animal welfare standards are world leading, I have a bridge to sell you. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
“Riding a bike to work in the morning has about 200 easily identifiable barriers...”
Well. Yeah, but if you’re on a bike you can bunnyhop over those barriers and that’s rad. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
The problem is not with consumers. Saying consumers are to blame for the #climate crisis isn’t visionary and daring. It’s shifting blame away from those who have structurally rigged the game to preserve a high emissions economy. #edsclimatechat #ccbc19
Why don’t I own an electric vehicle?
Um. Because I don’t own a car. Ride bikes for life etc. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
Or (c) National is banking on access to international carbon markets under rules that haven't been agreed yet and might well never be agreed... #CCBC19 #EDSClimateChat #CCBC2019
The NZ ETS was established in 2008 by @DavidParkerMP. I know because I wrote my dissertation in law on it in the summer that National was elected into government.
It was not established under the last National government. #CCBC19 #edsclimatechat
For @ScottSimpsonMP: National submitted our 30% off 2005 levels Paris NDC.
If we cut biological methane by only 10% by 2030, meeting this NDC will need the rest of economy to cut emissions by over 52%.
How can you say that’s unfair to farmers? #ccbc19 #ccbc2019 #edsclimatechat
It’s been a long time since @EmilyAHickson and I worked together on @FastForClimate back before Paris - and now we’re both speaking (with entirely different hats from back then!) at #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
The @naish_tim slide using @ReisingerAndy’s graphs to show how NZ decarbonisation is lagging behind should be a wake up call for #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat - but how much worse would the picture be if all six Kyoto greenhouse gases were factored in?
Winning slowly is losing. Current targets are insufficient. And current policies don’t achieve those weak targets. #edsclimatechat #ccbc19
"You can't start a transition without starting a transition." - @DavidParkerMP #EDSClimateChat #ccbc18
Today, I spoke to the #EDSClimateChat #CCBC18 about WWF and partners' work on @ScienceTargets. Here are my slides! www.slideshare.net/DavidTong8/science-based...
A round of applause for @SilverLiningGS’s policy work on the NZ ETS in the 2000s at #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat.
I reckon she deserves another, louder, longer one for her own 10th anniversary celebration - m.youtube.com/watch
The #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat wishes @DavidParkerMP a happy birthday for “his baby” - the ETS.
There are many reasons why we should stick with deploying electric light rail in Auckland not trackless electric teams. So. Many. Reasons. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
No country that “jumped on the bus” in agreeing to the Paris Agreement “without knowing where it was going”.
The difference was & is not as simple as “renegotiating the Paris deal”. This is all about what differentiation (as agreed in Paris) means. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
New Zealand’s carbon price is $25.25 right now - an all time high. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
I like the acronym of “CAT bonds” almost as much as I like “cat wag”. #CCBC18 #EDSClimateChat
TLDR for @SustainableAkl’s talk: Cities worldwide are doing totally amazing things to make people’s lives better, cut emissions and build resilience. Auckland can too. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
“Every kilometre cycled in Copenhagen provides over E1 of benefits, because they count everything. All the health benefits!” - @SustainableAkl #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
Strong argument from @SustainableAkl that we can decouple economic growth and population growth from emissions growth. #EDSClimateChat #ccbc18
“Every single action should be delivering multiple benefits.” - @SustainableAkl #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
“It’s heartbreaking to see a kid in Auckland with rheumatic fever.” - @SustainableAkl #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
“It really requires us to put on money where our mouths are.” - @SustainableAkl #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
Debating what’s more difficult between #climate adaptation or mitigation is fundamentally backwards thinking. Both are hard. And they impact on each other absolutely. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
“We need to be ahead of the curve. We need to understand where this is going. ... We will do the best for ourselves by doing the best for others.” - @RodOramNZ #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
“Just imagine how we could build a truly carbon neutral tourism product ... I think that would be a terrific world first.” - @RodOramNZ #EDSClimateChat #ccbc18
“No cut in emissions by 2030 is absolutely a non-starter for @Fonterra, because the world is watching us.” - @RodOramNZ
The opportunity for Kiwi innovation and disruption here is huge. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
The Paris Rulebook: it’s not a book, it doesn’t contain rules, and it won’t be agreed in Paris. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
There’s no question that the world is acting. Outliers like Trump don’t deserve a lot of the focus we give them. US emissions are falling, and there’s nothing Trump will do to change that. #ccbc18 #EDSClimateChat
