“These are very important times. If you have never lobbied a politician before, start with someone very junior and work your way up.” - @RodOramNZ calling for #ccbc19 participants to push hard over the next two months for cross party support on an ambitious #ZeroCarbonBill.
I’ve met some great sustainable food producers here at #ccbc19 in the last two days: Tesh from Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, Florence from Chia Sisters.
They don’t farm animals.
It is true that @jacindaardern’s government has done more to confront the #climate crisis than any previous NZ government.
But it is also true that they have not done nearly enough. Achieving the 1.5C goal requires action on unprecedented scale. #ccbc19
Great to hear @jacindaardern talking about the @leaders_climate and @sciencetargets at #ccbc19!
If you want to learn more about #ScienceBasedTargets - come chat! It’s the only independently verified way you can say you’re doing your business’s bit under the Paris Agreement.
Whenever I hear a lobbyist claim that something “is not included in Paris” because it’s too hard, I raise an eyebrow. #ccbc19
I helped @petersankoff put together Aotearoa’s first textbook on animal welfare law.
If you think our animal welfare standards are world leading, I have a bridge to sell you. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
A rise in plant based diets seems like much better climate solution than exporting coal dried milk powder to the world... #ccbc19
I’ve had a plant based diet for over 15 years now. In that time, I’ve run a marathon, several halves, done 320km bike races, completed ten 100km @oxfamnz Trailwalkers, and eaten some really, really delicious foods.
My diet now isn’t super healthy but a vegan diet can be. #ccbc19
You *can* substitute the nutrition you can get from killing and eating animals. Many, many people have successfully done so for a very long time. #ccbc19
The quantity of Beyond Burgers I’ve seen on screen in the last 48 hours in making me a very hungry, grumpy old vegan. #ccbc19
There is a huge difference between an upper limit and a target. @Fonterra appeare to conflate the two in its interpretation of the EAT-Lancet report. #ccbc19
I struggle to applaud @ExtinctionNZ for interrupting #CCBC19 to call for climate neutrality by 2025.
Here’s why: I’m committed to just transition. A crash decarbonisation over just five years would have a horrific, avoidable human cost, especially for Aotearoa’s most vulnerable.
Great to have @Professor_Zero and @seanweavernz kicking off the discussion about emissions offsetting at #CCBC19. Several questions already coming through about @sciencetargets!
Great to hear @KaapuaSmith talking about setting @sciencetargets at #ccbc19.
“Riding a bike to work in the morning has about 200 easily identifiable barriers...”
Well. Yeah, but if you’re on a bike you can bunnyhop over those barriers and that’s rad. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
The problem is not with consumers. Saying consumers are to blame for the #climate crisis isn’t visionary and daring. It’s shifting blame away from those who have structurally rigged the game to preserve a high emissions economy. #edsclimatechat #ccbc19
If you’re interested in #climate communications, you could do worse than starting with @ClimateOutreach. #ccbc19
Why don’t I own an electric vehicle?
Um. Because I don’t own a car. Ride bikes for life etc. #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
Or (c) National is banking on access to international carbon markets under rules that haven't been agreed yet and might well never be agreed... #CCBC19 #EDSClimateChat #CCBC2019
The NZ ETS was established in 2008 by @DavidParkerMP. I know because I wrote my dissertation in law on it in the summer that National was elected into government.
It was not established under the last National government. #CCBC19 #edsclimatechat
For @ScottSimpsonMP: National submitted our 30% off 2005 levels Paris NDC.
If we cut biological methane by only 10% by 2030, meeting this NDC will need the rest of economy to cut emissions by over 52%.
How can you say that’s unfair to farmers? #ccbc19 #ccbc2019 #edsclimatechat
There used to be a joke that if you went to a bar in Vancouver, you’d meet someone who claims to have founded Greenpeace.
I think the same is possibly becoming true in Aotearoa for Generation Zero... #ccbc19
It’s been a long time since @EmilyAHickson and I worked together on @FastForClimate back before Paris - and now we’re both speaking (with entirely different hats from back then!) at #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat
The @naish_tim slide using @ReisingerAndy’s graphs to show how NZ decarbonisation is lagging behind should be a wake up call for #ccbc19 #edsclimatechat - but how much worse would the picture be if all six Kyoto greenhouse gases were factored in?
Winning slowly is losing. Current targets are insufficient. And current policies don’t achieve those weak targets. #edsclimatechat #ccbc19
