Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, Chingford, built c1543. Did Queen Elizabeth ride up the stairs on her white palfrey to celebrate the defeat of the Armada? This is the local legend, yet to be proven as far as we know!

rom an early age I remember old men in my native district of Falcarragh County Donegal coming at night to our old house, smoking their clay pipes around our turf fireside, and talking about Colonel Olphert, the Landlord of that huge area of Donegal, and how his Battering-ram had terrified the native population, and especially the people like my parents who followed the orders of Michael Davitt and the Irish Land League leaders, to retain their rents as a nation wide protest against petty injustices. My parents with many other small-holders agreed to back the Land League leaders.

The result of this action brought the fury of this unjust man, and his callous flunkeys into every district. Olphert issued a proclamation forbidding the people to cut turf as the bogs were the property of the Landlord. They could not take seaweed to fertilize their land from their own shores, as that also belonged to Colonel Olphert.

In this draft of Eithne Coyle O'Donnell's account of Maud Gonne McBride, Coyle O'Donnell (1897–1985) recalls the injustices wrought by Wybrants Olphert during the Land War of the 1890s. It is a mythic account of a conflict that left a long and bitter memory. #EYAmythology #EYAMiotaseolaíocht

Ironically the popular urban legend claiming he invented cornflakes to stop masturbation is largely a myth in itself. They were invented as part of a larger campaign by Kellogg to encourage bland diets for good digestion, which he saw as a key part of clean living

John Kellogg's (yes he of cornflakes!) 'Home Hand-Book of Domestic Hygiene and Rational Medicine' (1896) instigated a popular myth: that 'self-gratification' would turn you blind & lead to poor digestion, memory loss, impaired vision, epilepsy, and even insanity

Gladstone was often sent poems by the public and this extract is taken from a poem that is six pages long. It is based on the Epic form, and was composed ‘in the autumn of 1858’, but received by Gladstone in 1865. Who would you send a poem to?

image from an address by Taoiseach, Charles J. Haughey at the official opening of the Knowth National Monument 15th July. Text reads: Address by the taoiseach, mr. charles J Haughey, T.D., at the official opening of the Knowth National Monument Complex, Monday 15th July 1991 at 11am. Ladies & gentlemen, It is with particular pleasure that I welcome you this morning to this complex of ancient monuments at Knowth. The Royal County of Meath has always played a central role in our history. Here in this county we are reminded of the Neolithic builders of the great 5000 year old passage tombs, of the Celtic High Kings at Tara, The early Christian Monks of Kells & Bective, the mediaeval Normans of Trim. It was here at the Boyne water that the great decisive clash of kings took place in 1690; it was from the villages and townlands of Meath that the United Irishmen and their followers went out in 1798; and it was on the broad plains of this county that Daniel O'Connell held his monster meetings in the last century.

King Arthur's Camelot is the mythological site connected with the South Cadbury shield, a bronze age find, brought to Salisbury Hospital for x-ray before conservation. Thin metal embossed with 1000s stamps, it's likely a ceremonial object (now in Museum of Somerset) #ExploreYourArchive #EYAMythology

An extract from an old handwritten book, a modernised version of which reads '...that struck her into the rickets and consumption being got at first by ill milk of two nurses. And notwithstanding all possible means I used to her, and had her at the wells at St Mungos (with my little daughter, Nally) for it, she did grow worse for it and very weak...'

Thornton took her infant daughter Betty to dip in St Mungo’s Well, Copgrove, in 1656, hoping to cure her rickets. Edmund Deane (1626) mocked its popularity as appealing to 'the common sort...especially the female sex, as ever more apt to be deluded' by superstition. #EYAMythology #EarlyModern 🗃️ 📜
